저는 한국어로 쓴 단편소설을 다 읽어내보지 못해서, 이 과제 위해 저를 스스로의 도전해 보고 싶었어요. 저는 동양학 도서관에 갔고, 단편소설집을 무작위로 콜라서, 또 무작위로 그 책을 아무데나 펴서 그 페이지에 있는 단편소설을 읽었어요. 정혜련에 의해 쓴 ”당신의 증거"란 소설였어요. 주인공은 치매를 가졌던 엄마와 같이 살고 돌봤는데, 며칠 전에 엄마가 죽어서 주인공은 엄마의 죽음을 슬퍼해요. 그래서 그는 좀 혼란스러워하는 것 같고, 머리가 흐려져서 믿을 수 있는 해설자가 아니에요. 예를 들어, 어느 밤에 큰 소리와 진동이 그 여자를 깨워서, 엄마는 벽을 긁고 있다고 생각하는데, 다음에 딸의 햄스터의 소린다고 생각하는데, 사실은 그냥 그의 핸드폰의 소리이에요. 이 이야기는 일인칭 시점으로 쓰여졌고 의식의 흐름 기법을 사용하기 때문에 우리는 그냥 주인공의 생각에 의지해야 하고 우리도 좀 혼날스러워하게 돼요.

이 이야기에서는 그 주인공이 엄마의 죽음을 슬퍼한데 그래서 엄마와 같이 사는 생활, 엄마와 관계, 자신의 딸을 어떻게 키우기, 또 치매를 가지던 엄마를 받아들이기 위해 회생들과 해야 한 선택들에 대해 생각을 많이 해요. 엄마가 죽은 지 아파트에 매캐한 냄새가 있지만, 주인공은 처음에는 딸의 햄스터의 냄새인다고 생각하는데, 그 냄새가 엄마의 방에 나고 있는 걸 깨달아요. 엄마의 방을 정리해야 한다는 걸 알아도, 엄마의 죽음을 맞서고 싶어하지 않아서 계속 연기해요. 결국 이야기의 클라이맥스는 주인공이 엄마의 벽장에서 웃을 꺼내면, 엄마의 겨울 코트 주머니에 있는 곰팡이 핀 음식을 찾기예요.

제 생각에는 문체 때문에 주인공의 생각을 이해할 수 있어서 아주 효과적인 문체예요. 3인칭으로 아니면 그 여자의 딸이나 남편의 시각으로 썼다면, 우리는 그 여자의 동기 부여와 생각을 못 이해하겠어요. 효과적으로 의식의 흐름 기법을 강용하기만 아니라, 또 자주 짧고 간단한 문장들을 써서 어떤 생각을 잘 강조해요.

그렇지만, 소설의 끝은 제 마음에 안 들고 혼란스러워요. 주인공은 엄마의 주머니에 있는 음식을 찾다가, 딸의 햄스터가 죽기 때문에 딸은 주인공를 탓해요. 하지만 그것일 뿐 아니라, 또 엄마의 죽음, 그리고 딸과 남편의 불행에 대한 책임을 져요. 그래서 주인공은 미쳐지고 그의 엄마처럼 벽을 긁고 곰팡이 핀 음식을 먹어요. 제 생각에는 억지로 하는 끝인 것 같아요. 그 전에, 이 이야기는 아주 슬프고 우울한데, 갑자기 끝에 충격이에요. 아마 작가는 어떻게 마무릴 수 있는지 몰라서 선정적인 끝을 썼는데요.

사람들이 치매같은 정신병에 대해 더 이야기해야 해서, 이 소설의 주제가 좋은데, 끝이 때문에 정신병을 잘 대표하지 않다. 또, 가끔 엄마가 악당으로 나타내서, 안 좋은 묘사예요. 그렇지만 재미있는 걸 하나는 그 소설의 한국인 문화적인 가족제도의 묘사예요. 주인공은 가족의 막내이고 언니가 3 명이 있어도, 막내가 엄마를 받아들이고 돌봤어요. 주인공은 이 것은 혼한하지 않다고 말해요. 하지만 전에 큰 언니가 엄마를 돌봤을 때, 자주 엄마를 버려두고 여행해서 엄마의 치매에 대해 큰 언니를 탓해요. 큰 언니와 다른 언니도 엄마가 요양원에 보내고 싶어해요. 이 것들 때문에 언니들와 막내, 또 언니들와 엄마의 관계를 변화해서 재미있었어요. 막내가 아픈 부모를 돌보기는 아주 힘들고 한국에서 드문 것인 것 같아요.

그러니까 좋은 점이 있어도, 이 소설은 전체적으로 괜찮지만 굉장하지는 않다. 저는 아마 다란 사람들에게 추천하지 않겠어요.

이젠 나는 그 책을 무작위로 골라서 읽은 방법은 슬기로운 방법이 아닌 걸 깨달았어요. 미래에 저는 도서관에 가기 전에 추천을 찾을게요. 그렇지만, 이 이야기는 아주 슬프고 좀 이상해도, 첫 다 읽어낸 한국어 단편소설여서 성취감을 맛보게 됐어요. 사전 없이 못 읽지만, 전 이제부터 더 많이 소설을 읽으려고 노력할게요.

"나는 메이트를 정말 사랑하는 캐나다사람이에요. 몇년전에 “원스”라는 영화을 만든 스웰시즌을 좋아하고 한국어를 공부하고 있었으니까 그 사람들의 한국에서 있는 공연을 인터넷으로 봤는데 메이트가 그 공연을 시작하고 난 그것 때문에 한국인 인디 음악에 관심이 생겼는데요. 몇년후에 난 최근에 그린플러그드를 다녔어요. 또 난 메이트를 처음 봐서부터 메이트를 지겨보고 있어서 메이트는 음악이야기같은 영화를 만들고 있다는 소식이 들었을 때 정말 기쁘고 기대돼요. 캐나다에서 난 이 영화를 극장에서 아마 볼 수 없지만, 지금 6월 중순까지 한국에서 여행하고 있는 중여서 이 영화를 한국에서 볼 수 있으면 정말 좋겠어요. 물론 난 이 영화를 볼 수 없어더라도, 아직 메이트를 계속 다 활동을 응원하고 사랑할게요!! 이 영화하고 메이트는 미래에 다 하는 것을 기대돼요~~~"

*그린플러그드는 난 갔던 음악 festival이예요. 그린플러그드를 준비한 사람들은 이 영화 개봉도 준비하고 있어서 난 그걸 말했어요. ^^

이 학교에서 이 일본사람의 생활같은 생활을 하는 학생들에게 한국어 가르치는 방법은 아주 흥미롭습니다.
At this school, the way they teach Korean to these students who live life like a Japanese person is very interesting.

일본어 학교에서 전학한 편입생들을 위한 특별한 한국어 수업이 있습니다.
There is a special Korean language class for those students who have transferred from Japanese schools.

그 수업에서, 이 일본어로 성장한 학생들이 한국어를 배우는 것을 뿐만 아니라 한국어를 배우다 보니 또 한국사람으로 생활하는 방법도 배웁니다.
In these classes, these students who were raised through Japanese not only learn the Korean language, but while learning the Korean language they also learn how to live as a Korean person.

일본어 수업밖에, 다 수업들은 한국어로만 가르치고 한국어로 한국 역사와 문화와 정치를 배웁니다.
Other than a Japanese language class, all their classes are taught only in Korean, and they learn Korean history and culture and politics in the Korean language.

그렇지만, 교사들도 한국어가 모국어가 아녀서 한국어 바름과 지식은 모국어인 일본어의 영향을 크게 받습니다.
However, the teachers are also non-native Korean speakers, so their Korean pronunciation and knowledge is heavily influenced by their native language of Japanese.

학생들에게 이 언어를 가르쳐서 학생들은 사투리처럼 아주 국부적인 언어를 배우고 있습니다.
They teach this language to the students, so the students are learning a very localized language, similar to a dialect.

한국에 가다면, 이 학생들에게 한국사람들과 한국어로 말하기가 아주 어렵겠습니다.
If they ever go to Korea, speaking with Koreans in Korean would be very hard for these students.

이제, 많은 학생들이 일본땅에서 태어난 3세대나 4세대가 있지만, 계속 한국인으로 자신의 정체성을 여깁니다.
By now, many of these students are the third or fourth generation to be born on Japanese soil, but they still continue to think of themselves as Korean.

한국사람은 누구인지 전 궁금하게 만듭니다.
This makes me curious about who exactly is a Korean person.

많은 사람들에게는 한국 국토에서 태어나고 성장한 한국어를 말하는 사람은 한국사람입니다.
To many people, someone who was born and raised in the Korean national territory and speaks Korean is a Korean person.

또 일본 국토에서 태어나고 성장한 일본어를 말하는 사람은 일본사람입니다.
And someone who was born and raised in the Japanese national territory is a Japanese person.

하지만, 재일교포와 일본사회에 따르면 이 것은 안 됩니다.
But according to Koreans in Japan and Japanese society, this cannot be true.

역사와 문화 때문에 일본에서 태어났음에도 불구하고 재일교포는 일본에서 동화되는 것을 너무 어렵고 바람직하지 않습니다.
Because of their history and culture, despite the fact that they were born in Japan, naturalizing in Japan is very difficult and undesirable.

아마 미래에 인구 증가에 의한 위기 때문에 일본은 이민자들을 더 받아들여야 할 것인데 그리고 일본에 있는 한국 국민들 끔찍한 역사를 점점 잊어버리고 일본에서 더 편하게 살게 될 수도 있습니다.
Maybe in the future, Japan will have to be more accepting of immigrants because of their population crisis, and it's possible that Koreans will gradually forget their terrible history over time and live in Japan more comfortably.

하지만 이것이 생기려면 일본사람들과 한국사람들이 정체성과 민족성에 대한 생각을 심각하게 해야 합니다.
But in order for this to happen, Japanese people and Korean people must think seriously about the issues of national and personal identity.

하나의 국가 내에서 편하게 공존하며 살아가기 위해 디아스포라 공동체와 현지국도 그런 사안들에 생각하고 함께 상의해야 합니다.
In order to coexist peacefully in one country, both the diaspora community and the host country must think about and discuss these issues.

캐나다에서도 우린 디아스포라 공동체와 함께 상의하고 협력하면 더 편하게 공존할 수 있다고 믿습니다.
In Canada too, I believe that if we discuss and work together with our diaspora communities, we will be able to live more comfortably together.

The Education and Identity of Koreans who Live in Japan: Part 1

디아스포라 공동체에 있는 사람들은 자주 생활방법에 대한 어려운 결정해야 됩니다.
People who live in diaspora communities are often forced to make difficult decisions about the way they live their life.

이 결정들은 자신의 민족성과 개인적인 정체성에 대한 생각에 영향을 미칠 수 있슴니다.
These decisions can affect their thoughts about their own ethnicity and personal identity.

이민들과 그의 후손들은 다른 나라에서 거의 매일매일 동화될지 고국의 풍습을 지키려고 할지 선택해야 해서 그들의 정체성을 결정하는 데는 중요한 역할을 합니다.
Immigrants and their descendants have to make decisions almost every day in their new country about whether they’ll assimilate or try to preserve the customs of their home country, which plays an important role in the determination of their identity.

그래도, 많은 디아스포라 공동체에서는 이 결정들이 자신의 선택보다 훨씬 더 큰 쟁점입니다.
However, in many diaspora communities, these decisions can be far more than a personal issue.

재일교포라고 부르는 일본에 사는 한국 국민들은 이 것의 아주 재미있는 본보기입니다.
Koreans living in Japan are an interesting example of this.

한국과 일본의 역사와 문화 때문에 그 한국 국민들에게 일본에서 동화될지 고국의 문화를 지키려고 할지 결정들은 민족주의라는 중대한 문제가 됐습니다.
Due to Korea and Japan’s history and culture, the decision to assimilate or preserve the homeland’s culture for these Koreans became a grave issue of nationalism.

2차 대전 후에, 2백만 넘는 한국 국민들이 일본에 샀습니다.
At the end of World War II, over two million Koreans resided in Japan.

이 한국 국민들 거의 다 일제 식민지 시대에 일을 찾으러 일본에 간 노동자나 2차에 일본의 육군에 징집된 사람입니다.
These Koreans were mostly labourers who had moved to Japan in search of work during the colonial period, or been forcibly drafted by the Japanese during the war.

해방 직후에 대부분 한국으로 송환했는데, 그 때의 일본에 비해 대한민국의 안 좋은 경제와 정치 상황 때문에 60만 한국 국민들이 머무르도록 선택했습니다.
After liberation, most of them repatriated to South Korea, however 600,000 chose to remain in Japan, mostly because of the unfavourable economic and political situation in South Korea at the time compared to that in Japan.

그렇게 함으로써, 이 한국 국민들 민족성과 정체성 위기에 직면해 있었습니다.
. By deciding to stay in Japan, these Koreans faced issues of identity and ethnicity.

이 전에, 그저 일 때문에 일본에 일시적으로 샀는데 그때에 그들의 한국에서 태어났고 또 조상은 한국에서 파묻혔을지라도 그 때 그 한국 국민들은 어쩌면 일본에서 평생을 살 것인 걸 깨달았습니다.
Before, they had just been living temporarily within Japan for work, but then they realised that they might live permanently in Japan, despite that they were born in Korea and their ancestors were buried there.

많은 재일교포들은 한일합방과 1923년의 대진화 동안 한국사람들을 대학살같은 사건들이 오랫동안 지속되는 기억들 통해 민족성을 생각해서 이 가망은 물론 바람직하지 않은 가망였습니다.
To many Koreans in Japan, this was of course not an acceptable prospect, due to the fact that they had come to think of their national identity through their lasting memories of events like the Japanese annexation of Korea and the massacre of Koreans during the 1923 earthquake.

또, 거의 다 일본 사람들 일본 민족성은 균질해야 하는 것을 믿어서 외국인들 일본에서 환영받지 못하기 때문에 재일교포들은 차별을 받았습니다.
Also, Koreans in Japan were discriminated against because almost all Japanese people believed that the Japanese national ethnicity had to be homogeneous, so foreigners were not welcome in Japan.

그래서 당연히 많은 재일교포들는 그들의 일본생활은 그저 일시적인 신세로 계속 생각하고 일본에서 사는 동안 한국의 민족성을 지키기를 위해 한국의 풍습을 따르고 한국어로 말하고 싶어했습니다.
Therefore understandably, many Koreans in Japan wanted to think of their life in Japan as only a temporary situation, and wanted to continue to preserve their Korean national identity while they lived in Japan by following Korean customs and speaking Korean.

재일교포의 필요로 하는 것을 충족시키려고 노력한 단체들이 창건됬는데 특히 재일교포 1세들의 후손들에게 한국어를 가르치게끔 만든 학교들 창건됬습니다.
Organizations were established that were designed to fulfil the needs of Koreans in Japan, especially schools that aimed to teach Korean to the descendants of first generation Koreans in Japan.

결국 적당할 때에 한국으로 송환할 것을 믿음으로 다 했습니다.
They did all this while believing that they would ultimately repatriate to South Korea at the right time.

그래서, 한국 국민들 일본땅에서 민족성을 지키기 위해 열심히 해야 한다는 생각했습니다.
Therefore Koreans in Japan thought that they needed to work hard to preserve their Korean identity.

최근에 저는 혹가이도에 있는 재일교포 아이들에게 한국어를 가르치고 그들의 한국 민족성을 촉진하는 걸 목표하는 학교에 대한 아주 재미있는 “우리 학교”라고 부르는 영화를 봤습니다.
Recently, I watched a very interesting movie entitled "Our School" about a school in Hokkaido that aims to teach Korean children in Japan the Korean language, as well as aims to encourage their sense of national identity.

그 학생들이 집에 일본어로 말하고, 일본 TV 프로들을 보고, 일본 음식을 먹고, 일본인 친구들이 있습니다.
These students speak Japanese at home, watch Japanese television shows, eat Japanese food, and have Japanese friends.

일본어로 말할 때, 마음이 가장 편합니다.
They are at their most comfortable when speaking Japanese.

하지만, 한국 핏줄 때문에 그의 가족은 한국사람을 알아봅니다.
However, because of their Korean blood, their families think of them as Koreans.

일본에서 한국사람을 차별이 흔하고 널리 퍼져서 일본 아이들 “한국인”다고 이름을 모욕으로 말하는데 일본땅에서 한국국민 아이들으로 성장하기가 아주 어려운 것 같습니다.
The discrimination of Koreans in Japan is common and widespread, to the point that Japanese children use "Korean" as a curse word, so being raised as a Korean child in Japan must be very difficult.

사실은, 어떤 학생들이 일본 사람인다고 믿음으로 성장해서, 진짜 한국국민인다고 들었을 때, 정체성 위기를 겪었습니다.
In fact, some children are raised believing that they are Japanese, so when they find out that they are really Korean nationals, they experience an identity crisis.

왕녀와 온두콩
The Princess and the Pea

옛날 예날에 한 외로운 왕자가 있었다.
Once upon a time there was a lonely prince.

그는 왕녀를 결혼하고 싶지만, 진짜 왕녀 아니면 안된다.
He wanted to marry a princess, but she had to be a real princess.

진짜 왕녀를 찾아 세계를 여행해서 많은 왕녀들을 찾았지만, 항상 이상이 있었다.
As he traveled the world searching for a real princess, he met many princesses, but there was always something wrong.

다들 진짜 왕녀가 아닌 것 같아서 왕자는 실망이 크고 집에 돌아갔다.
It seemed like none of them were real princesses so the prince was very disappointed and went back home.

어느 밤에 심한 폭풍이 있었다.
One night there was a terrible storm.

비가 심하게 내리고, 천둥과 번개가 치고, 집밖으로 나가기가 무섭는데 갑자기, 도시의 대문에서 똑똑 두드리는 소리가 들렸다.
It was raining terribly hard, there was thunder and lightning, and everyone was scared to go outside. But suddenly, there was a knock at the town gate.

왕은 한 사람을 나가서 문을 열어라다고 명령했다.
The king ordered someone to go out and answer the door.

한 왕녀는 밖에 서고 있었지만 폭풍이 때문에 옷과 머리가 흠뻑 젖고 너무 안 좋아 보였는데 진짜 왕녀다고 주장했다.
A princess was standing outside, but because of the storm her clothes and hair had been drenched. Although she didn't look like one, she claimed she was a princess.

여왕은 그를 믿지 않고 "그것이 사실인지 보겠지!"다고 생각했지만 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
The queen didn't believe her and thought "We'll see if that's true!", but didn't say a thing.

그냥 침실에 들어가고 매트리스를 벗어서 침대틀에 완두콩을 놓았다.
She just went into the bedroom, and removed the mattress, and placed a pea on the bed.

그 다음엔 콩 위에 매트리스 스물 개를 놓고 그 딱딱한 매트리스들 위에 닭털 매트리스 스물 개도 놓았다.
Next she put 20 mattresses on top of the pea, and on top of those firm mattresses she put twenty feather beds.

만족하게 되면, 여왕은 왕녀에게 그 밤에 그 침대에서 잘 수 있다고 말했다.
When she was satisfied, she told the princess that she could sleep on that bed that night.

다음 날 아침에, 왕녀에게 잘 잤냐라고 물어봤다.
The next morning, they asked the princess how she had slept.

왕녀는 "잠을 제대로 못 잤어요!"다고 불평했다. "눈도 붙이지 못했어요! 침대에 문제가 있었어요. 단단한 것위에 누운 것 같았고 제 온몸에 멍이 들었어요! 끔찍한 경험이었네요."
"I slept terribly!" the princess said. "I didn't sleep a wink! There was a problem with my bed. It felt like I was lying on something hard and now I'm bruised all over! It was a terrible experience."

그래서, 다들 그 왕녀는 매트리스 마흔 개 통해 콩을 느낄 수 있으니까 진짜 왕녀를 알았다.
Therefore, everyone knew that the princess was a real princess because she could feel the pea through the 40 mattresses.

진짜 왕녀밖에, 아무도 그렇게 민잔하지 않다.
No one but a real princess could be that sensitive.

그러니 왕자는 진짜 왕녀를 찾았는지 알아서 그 왕녀를 결혼하고 완두콩은 박물관에 전시됐다.
So the prince knew he had found a real princess and married her, and the pea is now in a museum.

이건 틀림없이 실화다.
This is a true story.

친구들은 제 글을 검사하셔서 정말 고마워요 ^_^ 많은 한국인들이 Doctor Who 알아셔서 놀라고 기뻐요!

요즘 제가 제일 좋아하는 TV프로가 영국 드라마 Doctor Who예요. 주인공은 시간과 공간을 여행하는 인간을 닮은 외계인인데... 특이한것 같죠? 실제로 1963년에 처음 시작했을 때에는 역사를 가르치기 위해 사요헀던 어린이 프로그램였어요. 그렇지만 지금은 모험-드라마 쇼에요. 맞아요 ㅋㅋ 1963부터 방송이 되고 있어요 (거의 내내 방송하다가... 10년 동안 방송이 안 됐어요). 아무튼, 그 외계인을 "The Doctor"라고 불리고 몇 년마다 그 배우의 배역을 바꿔요. 다른 행성과 시간을 여행해요. 인간와 항상 여행을 하는데, 보통 여자랑 하더라구요 ㅋㅋ 세상을 정복하려는 로봇이나 괴물이나 외계인이 항상 나타나서, the Doctor가 그들을 물리쳐 야해요. The Doctor에는 어딘지 정말 수수께끼 같은 데가 있어요. 재미있어요~ 지금의 배우를 정말 좋아해요. 이것은 짧은 예고편이에요!!

요즘은 제 제일 좋아하는 TV프로가 영국인 Doctor Who이에요.
Lately my favourite TV show is the British show Doctor Who.

주인공은 시간과 공간 여행하는 인간 닮은 외계인인데... 이상한 것 같죠?
The main character is a time travelling alien who looks like a human... it sounds weird, right?

실제로 1963년에 처음 시작했을 때에는 역사를 가르치기 위해 사용했던 어린이 프로그램였어요.
Actually when it first started, it was a children's program designed to teach history.

그렇지만 지금은 모험-드라마 쇼예요.
However now it's an adventure-drama show.

밎아요 ㅋㅋ 1963부터 방송이 되고 있어요 (거의 대부분의 시간인데... 10년쯤 동안 방송이 안 됬어요).
That's right ㅋㅋ They've been airing the show since 1963 (almost the whole time... for about 10 years they were off the air).

아무튼, 그 외계인은 "The Doctor"라고 부르고 몇 년마다 그 배우의 배역을 바꿔요.
Anyway, the alien is called "The Doctor" and every few years they recast the actor.

다른 행성과 시기에 여행해요.
He travels to other planets and times.

인간와 항상 길동무한데, 평소에 여자예요 ㅋㅋ
He always travels with a human, and it's usually a woman ㅋㅋ

세상을 인수하게 되고 싶은 로봇이나 괴물이나 외계인이 항상 있어서, the Doctor는 패배시키어 야해요.
There's always a robot or monster or alien who wants to take over the world, so the Doctor has to defeat them.

The Doctor에는 어딘지 정말 수수께끼 같은 데가 있어요.
There is something very mysterious about the Doctor.

재미있어요~ 요새의 배우를 정말 좋아해요.
It's fun~ I really the recent actor.

질문이 있어요!

슈퍼주니어의 새 노래가 공개되었는데 미인아 (BONAMANA)라고 불러요. 하지만 우리 해외팬들이 타이틀의 뜻이 뭐는지 모르겠어요. "BONAMANA"가 아마 "보나마나"일거에요. 그렇지만 한 팬은 사실 “정말 아름다운 여자”를 의미한다고 말했는데 전 "Of course"를 의미한다고 생각해요. 저는 "미인아 = 아름다운 여자, 보나마나 = 물론"이라고 생각해요. 맞죠? 아니면 보나마나 속어예요?

하지만! 앞으로 다시 열심히 공부하려고 해요! 아자!!!

어제 전 서강대학교 한국어 학습 사이트로 한국어를 공부하기 시작하고 첫 수업을 끝냈어요.
Yesterday I started using Seogang University's Korean Learning Site to study Korean and I finished the first lesson.

그 사이트의 일부 것이 좋아요. 듣기 절이 아주 좋아서 제 이해하는 능력이 더 좋아질 수 있는 것 같아요.
The site has some good parts. The listening section is really good so I think my comprehension will get better.

하지만 시험은 좀 이상하는데요. 대답이 없어서 정답인지 틀린지 몰라요.
But the quizzes are a little weird... There are no answers so you don't know if you got it right or wrong.

또 들으면서 대분을 읽지 못해요.
Also you can't read the script while you're listening.

흠... 아무튼~ 계속 쓸까 해요.
Hm... anyway~ I will keep using it.

요즘은 또 학국인 글을 영어로 많이 번역하고 있어요.
Lately I've also been translating a lot of articles from Korean to English.

연습하기에 좋은 방법이에요!

어떤 한국어 공부의 장학금을 받기 위해 지난 금요일에 경축 행사에 가야 했어요.
In order to receive a Korean Studies scholarship, I had to go to a gala event last Friday.

컨트리클럽에 도착할 때, 어떤 종업원이 작은 회의실에 제 친구와 날 데리고 갔어요.
When we arrived at the country club, an employee showed my friend and me to a small conference room.

이 방에서 모든 사람이 한국-캐나다인 학생이었어요
In the room, all the people were Korean-Canadian students.

그 방에서 한국인 아닌 사람이 저밖에 없어서 다들 저를 쳐다홨는데 잠시 후에 저에 익숙해졌어요 ㅋㅋ.
I was the only non-Korean person in the room, so everyone was staring at me, but after awhile they got used to me ㅋㅋ.

우리가 어떤 아이스 브레이커 게임을 했어요.
We played an ice breaker game.

이 게임의 목적은 서술하는 문장을 한 사람과 연결시키는 것있는데, 예를 들어 "이 사람은 한국인 발라드를 들어요.".
The purpose of the game was to match people with descriptive sentences, for example "This person listens to Korean ballads."

연결시키기 위해 모든 사람들에 말하고 질문을 물고 연결시킨 문장 옆에 그들의 이름들을 써야 했어요.
In order to match people, we had to talk to everyone and ask them questions, and then write down their names next to their matching sentences.

"이 사람은 매운 한식을 싫어해요"라는 문장이 있었기 때문에 많은 학생들이 저에게 "매운 한식을 먹을 수 없죠?"하고 물었지만 저는 항상 "아니요~ 매운 음식을 좋아해요~"하고 대답했어요.
Because there was a sentence that said "This person doesn't like spicy Korean food", a lot of students asked me "You can't eat spicy Korean food, right?", but I always replied "No~ I like spicy food~".

다들 영어로 말해서 전 괜찮았는데 한국어로 쓸 때, 거의 다 이해할 수 있어요.
Everyone spoke English so I was okay, and when they spoke Korean I could understand almost all of it.

제 대학교에서 온 학생들이 많았지만 저는 결코 만난 적은 없어요.
There were a lot of students from my university, but I'd never met them before.

다들 아주 착하고 똑똑한 사람들이었어요.
Everyone was really nice and intelligent.

행사 준비자가 장학금을 받기 워해 줄을 서는 방법을 보여주었어요.
The event organizer showed us how to line up in order to receive our scholarships.

그 다음에는 행사가 시작되고 있어서 우리가 아주 큰 식당에 갔어요.
Then we all went to the huge dining hall because the event was starting.

저는 그 다음에 있었던 일에 대해 나중에 말하겠어요. ^^

한국 역사에 대한 에세이를 쓰려고 도서관에서 연구를 해야 해요. [써려고?]
In order to write an essay on Korean history I have to do research.

고맙게도 도서관은 제 기숙사에서 가까운 곳에 있어요.
Thankfully the library is close to my dormitory.

도서관까지 5분쯤만에 걸어갈 수 있어요.
I can walk to the library in about 5 minutes.

지름길로 가면, 3분만 걸러요. ^^
If I take a shortcut, it only takes 3 minutes.

그렇지만, 다음 학년에 가숙사를 나갈거에요.
However, next school year I'm going to move out of the dormitory.

덜 편리할 것이지만, 전 기대해요.
It will be less convenient, but I'm excited.

친구가 3명과 함께 캠퍼스를 바로 벗어난 아파트에서 살고 있을거에요.
I will be living together with three friends in an apartment just off campus.

내년에 도서관까지 15분쯤에 걸어갈 수 있을거에요.
Next year I'll be able to walk to the library in about 15 minutes.

한국어에서 "nerd"는 것 같은 단어가 없죠?
In Korean is there no word like "nerd"?

In English, "nerd" can have positive connotations too, but Naver lists really bad things for "nerd" >.<. So I just used bookworm instead. If someone calls themself a nerd, it just means they really like studying, or they really like "nerdy" things like science fiction or comic books. It's not necessarily bad! So I think I am a nerd. :)

I won a Korean studies scholarship!

In order to receive the scholarship I have to go to a gala event on Friday.

컨트리클럽에서 있는 아주 호화로운 행사일 것이에요!
It will be a very swanky event at a country club!

전 적절한 드레스를 없어서 쇼핑를 해야 했어요.
I didn't have an appropriate dress so I had to go shopping.

보통으로 전 쇼핑 하는 것을 좋아하지만, 특정한 것은 필요가 있을 때 쇼핑하는 건 진짜 귀찮아요.
I usually like to shop, but when you need a specific thing shopping is really annoying.

너무 많은 가게에 가고 너무 많은 드레스를 입어 봤는데 아무것도 좋아하지 않았어요.
I went into a lot of stores, and tried on a lot of dresses, but I didn't like anything [In English I'd say: "nothing seemed to work". Is there anything like this in Korean?]

So irritating!

제 여자 친구들이 이해할 것이에요.
I am sure my female friends will understand.

아무것도 필요없을 때, 쇼핑하는 건 재미있지만 한 것을 필요있으면 정말 힘들어요.
When you don't need anything shopping is fun, but when you need something it's really tiring.

아무튼~ 드디어 드레스를 찾았아서 기뻐요!
Anyway~ I finally found a dress so I'm glad!

하지만... 작년의 장학금 받는 사람들미 목록을 찾았는데, 모든 성들은 이, 박, 김, 백, 등이에요.
But... I found a list of last year's scholarship recipients and all the family names are Lee, Park, Kim, Baik, etc.

그 행사에 한국인 아닌 사람이 저밖에 없어서 좀 긴장해요 >_<.
I think I'll be the only non-Korean person at the event so I'm a little nervous.

그렇지만, 아직도 아주 기뻐요 ^^
However, I'm still really glad ^^

시의 구문론와 대화의 구문론은 아주 달라죠.
Poetry's syntax and conversational tone syntax are very different.

한국어 시와 가사를 이해하기가 진짜 어려워요!
Understanding Korean poetry and lyrics is really difficult!

예를 들어, 저는 어떤 사진첩에서 이 문장을 봤는데: "내가 뭘해야 정말 행복한지는 요즘 들어서 알게 된거다."
For example, I saw this sentence in a photo book: "내가 뭘해야 정말 행복한지는 요즘 들어서 알게 된거다."

시적인 분위기를 만들어 보는 것 같았어요.
It seemed like they were trying to make a poetic atmosphere.

아마 그 문장은 그냥 어렵지만, 저한테 시전인 것 같아요...
Maybe that sentence is just difficult but to me it seems poetic...

문제는 전 다 단어를 알지만 그 문장을 전혀 이해할 수 없는 것이에요 ㅠ.ㅠ
The problem is that even though I know all the words, I can't understand it at all ㅠ.ㅠ

단어들은 그 문장에서 삭제한 것 같았어요.
It seems like words were deleted from that sentence.

아마 그는 안 좋은 예이에요.
Maybe that is not a good example.

흠... 전 사랑하는 노래 중의 하나는 이 노래이에요:
Hmm... This song is one of my favourite songs.

The lyrics are a little weird, right?

이 문장들은 문법에 맞지 않지만... 이 노래에 아주 아름아운 것 같아요.
These sentences aren't grammatically correct but... in the song they sound very beautiful.

그 뜻은 ... "난 어떻게 하라고 말해라"와 비슷해요.
The meaning is similar to "Tell me what I should do."

아무튼... 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 것은... 어... 언어를 공부하기가 어려워요 ㅋㅋ
Anyway... my point is... uhm... studying languages is hard, haha.

제 모든 언어를 공부하기에 대한 일기들은 이렇게 끝나다고 생각해요 ㅎㅎ

오늘 제 대학교에서 한국어 말하기 대회날이었어요.
Today was the day of the Korean speech contest at my university.

온 주(州) 안에서 많이 학생들이 제 대학교에 왔어요.
Many students came to my university from all over the province.

연습 많이 했을지라도 너무 너무 불안해해서 처음에는 전 실책들을 범했지만...
Even though I practised a lot, I was really really nervous so at the beginning I made some mistakes but...

삼등을 했어요!
I got third place! :D

Everyone is celebrating!

길거리에서 너무 많이 사람들이 있니까 토론토와 밴쿠버에서 일부의 도로의 통행을 금했어요.
There are so many people in the streets that in Toronto and Vancouver they've closed some streets.

이번 올림픽에서 캐나다는 14개의 금메달을 땄어요.
Canada has won 14 gold medals in this Olympics.

캐나다 잘했어요!
Good job Canada!

오늘 밤 올림픽을 끝낼거에요.
Tonight the Olympics will finish.

그것은 슬프지만, 이 경기가 좋은 결말이었네요.
It's sad but this game was a good ending.

This is because I am watching Olympic figure skating!

가숙사에 살고 있고 TV를 없어서 올림픽 보기 어려운 것 같지만 고맙게도 인터넷에서 그것을 볼 수 있어요!
I live in a dorm and have no TV, so watching the Olympics would be difficult, but thankfully I can watch it on the internet!

올림픽은 제 공부에 좋지 않아요 ㅋㅋ

제 엄마가 저는 정말 귀찮은 아기였다고 말해요 ㅋㅋ.
My mom says I was a very annoying baby ㅋㅋ

많은 잠을 자는 방법을 노력했지만, 아무것도 돕지 않아요.
I've tried many methods to get to sleep, but nothing helps.

제 친구가 저는 너무 스트레스를 받기 때문에 잠을 잘 수 없어서 전 명상을 해야 한다고 말했어요.
My friend says that I can't sleep because I am too stressed out, so she says that I should try meditation.

흠... 글쎄요...

이번 날에 (2윌 2일), 어떤 사람들이 하나 마멋을 겨울잠에서 깨우고 기다려요.
On this day (February the 2nd), some people wake up a groundhog from hibernation and then wait.

그 마멋이 나오고 그의 그림자를 보게 되면, 무서워하지고 다시 그의 굴에 돌아가요.
If the groundhog comes out and sees his shadow, he gets scared and goes back into his den.

이론적으로 이것은 겨울 날씨가 6주 동안 더 남은 것을 의미해요.
In theory, this means that the winter weather will remain for 6 more weeks.

마멋이 그의 그림자를 안 보면, 겨울이 끝나요!
If the groundhog doesn't see his shadow, then winter is over!

하지만, 오늘은 그 마멋이 그의 그림자를 봤어요.
However, today the groundhog saw his shadow.

어쩌면 그 것이 때문에 오늘은 토론토에 2010의 첫 눈이 와요.
Maybe because of that, 2010's first snow fell today.

그 것처럼 전 진짜로 믿을 수 없는데... 재밌어요!

겨우 합격했어요!
I barely passed!

그런데, "그건 옳지 않아..."고 생각했어요.
But I thought "this isn't right...".

다 과제에 좋은 점수를 받고 시험에 잘 한다고 생각해서 옳지 않다는 거 알아요.
I got good marks on all my assignments and I think I did well on the exam, so I know it's not right.

그 성적을 받기 위해선 시험에 0를 받아야 돼요.
In order to receive that mark, you'd have to get a 0 on the exam.

제 선생님이 제 시험지를 잃어버린 것 같아요. 어떡해요 ㅠ.ㅠ
It seems like my professor has lost my exam paper.

제 선생님께 이메일을 보내드리지만, 아무것도 아직 받지 않아요.
I emailed my professor but I haven't heard anything back yet.

대학 행정직에게 전화했는데, 저한테 서류들을 작성하라고 말했어요.
I called the university administration and they told me to fill out some forms.

그래서, 이제 전 기다려야 돼요.
So now I have to just wait.

아, 왜요 T.T
Ugh, why did this happen!

그 일처름 때문데 때때로 토론토대학교가 싫어요.
Things like this make me not like University of Toronto.

너무 많이 학생들이 있거든요.
There are just too many students.

요즘은 제가 “어떤 언어를 유창한다"이란 뜻에 대해 생각하 고있어요.
Lately I've been thinking about what it means to be fluent in a language.

전 한국어를 유창하고 싶지만, 그 단이 무슨 뜻이지요?
I want to be fluent in Korean, but what does that word mean?

다른 사람들께 다른 뜻이 있다고 생각해요.
I think it must have different meanings for different people.

저에게 한국어를 유창하게 구사하러 다 어휘를 알아야 해요.
To me, in order to be fluent in Korean you must know all the vocabulary.

한국어를 모국어처럼 말해야 돼요.
You have to be like a native speaker.

정말 힘들겠네요…
It's really difficult...

저는 한국어 회화를 말할 수 있고 싶어요.
I want to be able to speak conversational Korean.

문법을 알아면, 사전밖에 필요없다고 생각해요!
Also I think if I know the grammar, all I need is a dictionary!

저는 그냥 한국어를 들을 때 더 이해하고 싶는데… 요즘은 제 한국인 찬구들의 말을 더 이해해요! ^___^
I just want to understand more Korean when I hear it... but lately I've been understanding my Korean friends more! ^___^

일전에 한국식당에서 제 친구와 웨이트리스 같이 말해서 전 다 이해해서 정말 기뻤어요!
Recently my friend was talking to a waitress at a Korean restaurant and I understood it all, so I was really happy!

그래서, 한국어를 유창한 사람이 되기에 필요없어요.
Therefore, I don't feel like I need to be a fluent speaker.

그냥 사람들이 완전하게 이해하고 싶어요.
I just want to understand most things.

전 공부 열심히 할 거예요!!
I will study really hard!!

대학생에 크리스마스 휴가는 다음 주에 끝나서 저는 지금 열심히 한국어를 공부하고 있어요.
Christmas holidays for university students are over next week, so I have been studying Korean really hard lately.

다른 수업이 다시 시작할 때, 한국어를 공부할 겨를도 없어. ㅠ.ㅠ
When my other classes start again, I will be too busy to study Korean.

하지만, 요즘은 전 너무 많이 팟캐스트를 들어서 잠결에 그 팟캐스트 방송인의 목소리를 듣는 것 같아요.
But lately I've been listening to so many podcasts that I feel like I hear the broadcasters voices in my sleep.

아이크~ 제 다른 수업이 중의 하나는 쓸데없는 생물학이에요.
Aigoo~ Of all my other classes, the one that is useless is Biology.

참... 저한테 쓸모없는데... 전 졸업하고 싶으면, 그 수업을 받아야해요.
Well, to me it is useless... but in order to graduate, I have to take it.

그래서, 한국어를 공부하기 전에 생물학을 공부해야해요.
So before I can study Korean, I have to study Biology.

한국어 공부 시간이 없어요!
There is no time to study Korean!

생물학을... 전 싫어해요. -__-
I really don't like Biology -__-.

한식도 좋아요 ^_^ 제가 맵다고 생각하지만, 맛있어요!
I also like Korean food. Although I think it's spicy, it's delicious!

저는 노래방을 제일 좋아하고 한국인 텔레비전을 보기가 좋아요.
I really like going to Karaoke, and watching Korean television.

사람들이 때때로 너무 빠르게 말씀해서, 한국인 자막을 있는 것이 도움이 돼요.
Shows with Korean subtitles are helpful because people sometimes speak too fast [is "for me to understand" implied here? Or how should I add that?].

토론토대학교에서 1년 쯤 한국어를 공부하고 있어요.
I've been studying Korean at University of Toronto for about a year now.

그러나 아직 초심잔 것 같아요.
But I still feel like a beginner.

더 빠르게 배우고싶어서, 요즘 혼자 공부기 시작했어요.
I want to learn faster, so lately I have started studying on my own.

힘들어요! 혼자 공부기는 교실에서 공부하보다 더 어렵는데,
It's really difficult! Studying alone is much harder than studying in a classroom.

근데, 제가 lang-8을 찾아서 기뻐요.
But I am glad that I've found lang-8!
