Translation?

안녕하세요?

Hello lang-8ers.... It's been awhile since I've visited this site. I'm afraid I have not done much Korean study, though I'm still using it (Korean) from time to time.

I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in translating stories, articles and quotes from my friend's website into Korean or other non-English languages.

I'm a big fan of the site and would love to share the ideas in it with my Korean friends.

I've already been lucky enough to have one Korean friend translate a few of the stories.

This a translation from So-young You, to give you an example: :-)

깊은 정글 속에 한 토착 부족이 살고 있었다. 그들은 우리가 스스로를 속이고 있는 ‘문명화’라는 것으로부터 고립된 부족이었다.

어느 날, 부족의 주술사가 부락 바깥쪽의 자그마한 웅덩이를 지나갔다. 그곳에서 그는 어린 소년을 만났다. 웅덩이의 물은 소년의 무릎께까지 차올라 있었다. 소년은 몸을 숙이고 손으로 세찬 물장구를 치고 있었다. 그러고 나서, 소년은 이따금 물속에 얼굴을 담갔다가 다시 고개를 쳐들곤 했다. 그리고는 웅덩이의 다른 쪽으로 가서 똑같은 행동을 하기 시작했다.

주술사가 그 소년을 부르고는 다음과 같이 물었다.

“뭘 하고 있는 거니?”

“나는 나 자신을 찾고 있어.” 하고 소년이 말했다. “엄마가 말했어. 물속을 들여다보면 나 자신을 볼 수 있을 거라고 말이야.”

“하하하!” 주술사는 웃으며 말했다. “이리 오렴.”

그는 웅덩이 옆에 앉아서 자기 옆으로 오라고 소년에게 손짓했다. “나랑 잠깐만 앉았다 가자. 가만히 있어봐. 좀 참아야 해. 그냥 쳐다보기만 하는 거야.” 그들은 소년의 세찬 물장구에 흩어졌던 점토가 다시 웅덩이 바닥으로 가라앉을 때까지, 꽤 오랜 시간을 앉아 있었다. 웅덩이 표면은 마치 거울처럼 고요해졌다.

“자, 이제 보렴.”하고 주술사가 말했다.

소년은 웅덩이를 바라보았다. 그리고 생애 처음으로, 소년은 자신의 얼굴을 보게 되었다. 그는 경이로운 감각에 압도되었다.

“기억하렴.”하고 주술사는 말했다. “인생의 여러 고비들과 맞서 싸우며 너 자신이 누군지를 잊어버리게 되는 순간이 오면, 오늘의 교훈을 기억해내렴. 무슨 일이 일어나든지 간에, 한 걸음 물러서서 잠시 동안만 가만히 있어보렴. 그리고 [오늘을] 떠올리렴. 그러면 [네 마음속에서] 너를 비추는 웅덩이 표면이 고요해지면서, 거기에 비치는 너 자신을 다시 보게 될 거야.”

Deep within the jungle was a village where lived an indigenous tribe, completely isolated from what we like to kid ourselves is civilisation.

One day, The Shaman of the tribe was walking past a small pool which was located just outside the village. There he found a young boy stood up to his knees in the water. He was bent over, thrashing about with his hands. Then now and again he would put his face in the water and bring it out again. He then moved to another part of the pool and began the same process.

The Shaman called out to the boy. "What are you doing?" he asked.

"I am looking for my self," said the boy. "My mother told me that if I looked in the pool, then I would be able to see my self."

"Ha ha!" laughed the Shaman. "Come here," he said to the boy. He sat down by the pool and beckoned the boy to sit down next to him. "Sit with me a little while," he continued. "Keep quite still. You need patience. Just watch."

They sat for quite some time until the silt that had been disturbed by the boy's vigorous antics began to once more settle on the bottom of the pool. The surface of the pool became still and calm, mirror-like.

"Now look," said the Shaman.

The boy looked, and for the very first time in his life, he saw his own face. He was overcome with a sense of wonder.

"Remember this lesson," said the Shaman, "when you are fighting with life's troubles and have forgotten who you are. Whenever that happens, always step out and keep still for a while. Remember it. Then the surface of the pool of life will become still and you will see your self reflected in it once more."
