It was early morning as the Shaman set out from the village heading for the forest. As he approached the pool just outside the village, he saw a now familiar figure. It was the boy he had met there twice before.
이른 아침, 주술사가 부락을 나서 숲으로 향했다. 부락 바깥쪽의 웅덩이에 이르렀을 때, 주술사는 이제는 익숙해진 얼굴을 보았다. 이미 여기에서 두 번이나 만난 적이 있는 소년이었다.

The boy held a stick in each hand and was banging them together, moving from one foot to the other. At first the Shaman thought he was dancing, but as he got closer, he noticed that rather than being joyous, the boy's face and body language showed great effort and tension.
소년은 양손에 나무막대를 쥐고 ‘딱’ 소리가 나도록 막대를 치며 걸음을 옮기고 있었다. 주술사는 처음에 소년이 춤을 추고 있나 보다, 하고 생각하다가 소년이 점점 가까워지자 그가 매우 기뻐하고 있음을 깨달았다. 소년의 얼굴과 몸짓에서 엄청난 노력과 긴장감이 엿보였다.

"What are you doing?" he asked the boy.
“뭘 하고 있는 거니?” 주술사가 소년에게 물었다.

"I am trying to knock this stick out of my hand. My mother caught me playing with a stick and told me it was dangerous. She told me to get rid of the stick. So I picked up this other stick and knocked the first stick out of my hand. But then I was left with this stick in my other hand. I cannot go home with this stick. My mother will not allow it. So I have picked up the first stick again and now I am trying to knock this stick out of my hand."
“손에 쥔 막대를 부러뜨리는 중이야. 엄마가 내가 막대를 가지고 노는 걸 보고는 이건 위험한 거라고 했어. 막대를 없애 버리래. 그래서 다른 막대를 주워서 손에 쥐고 있던 먼젓번 막대를 부러뜨렸지. 그런데 다른 쪽 손에 또 막대가 남았어. 막대를 가지고 집으로 돌아갈 수는 없어. 엄마는 이걸 용납하지 않으실 거야. 그래서 아까 그 막대를 집어다가 손에 남은 다른 막대를 부러뜨리려고 하는 중이야.”

The Shaman smiled to himself. He was beginning to really enjoy this boy.
주술사는 슬그머니 미소를 지었다. 그는 소년이 정말로 재미있게 느껴지기 시작했다.

"Why don't you just drop both the sticks?" the Shaman asked.
“막대를 둘 다 버리지 그러니?” 주술사가 물었다.
"Drop them?" answered the boy. "I am sorry, but I do not know what the word 'drop' means."
“버리라고?” 소년이 대답했다. “미안하지만, ‘버린다’는 게 무슨 뜻인지 모르겠어.”

The Shaman bent down and picked up two stones. He stood up and held out his hands, at first clasping the stones tightly. Then he opened his hands and let the stones fall to the ground.
주술사는 몸을 구부려서 돌멩이 두 개를 주웠다. 그는 일어서서 손을 내밀고, 처음에 돌멩이를 꽉 움켜쥐었다가 손을 펴서 돌멩이가 땅으로 떨어지게 만들었다.

The boy looked on, astonished. Maybe it seems stupid if you know about dropping but he had simply never considered this possibility. For a while he stood there. There was a lot of tension on his face and the Shaman could see that he was still holding on tight, still clasping the sticks. He was trying hard to drop them instead of simply dropping them.
소년이 지켜보다가 깜짝 놀랐다. ‘버린다’는 것이 무엇인지 알고 있는 사람이라면 이 행동이 바보 같아 보일지도 모르겠지만, 소년은 그야말로 이런 일이 가능하리라고는 한 번도 생각해 본적이 없었다. 잠시 동안 소년은 그 자리에 서 있었다. 소년의 얼굴에 상당한 긴장감이 서려 있었다. 주술사는 소년이 여전히 막대를 꽉 움켜쥐고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 소년은 막대를 간단히 버리지 못하고 그것을 힘겹게 버리려고 하고 있었다.

"Just relax," the Shaman said to the boy. "You must relax your hands totally. Don't try. Don't make an effort of it. Just let go."
“긴장을 풀렴.” 주술사가 소년에게 말했다. “손의 긴장을 완전히 풀어야 해. [무언가를 하려고 의식적으로] 노력하지 마라. 애쓰지 마라. 그냥 [자연스럽게 흘러가도록] 내버려 둬.”

More minutes passed. The Shaman kept perfectly still, waiting. Then finally, suddenly, the boy got it. He let go and both sticks fell to the floor simultaneously.
몇 분이 더 흘렀다. 주술사는 아주 조용히, 기다리고 있었다. 그러자 마침내 갑자기, 소년은 깨달았다. 소년이 [긴장감을] 버리는 것과 동시에 막대가 바닥으로 떨어졌다.

"Ha ha!" shouted the boy. "I did it! I did it!" he laughed and began to dance around the sticks.

"Now pick them up and do it again." the Shaman said. "Quickly, or you will lose it."

The boy did as he was told. He did it several times until it became instant and effortless for him, just as it was for the Shaman. Then the Shaman went over by the nearest trees and found himself two sticks.
소년은 주술사의 말에 따랐다. 그는 즉각적이고 힘들이지 않게 될 때까지 몇 번이고 그 행동을 반복했다. 그러자 주술사는 가까이 있는 나무로 다가가 두 개의 막대를 찾아냈다.

"Join me!" he said. The Shaman began to dance, banging his sticks together. The movement was like that of the boy when he had first noticed him. But with a joy, with a spring in the step a smile on the face and relaxation in his body. He banged his sticks together as part of the dance. "Join me!" he said once more.
“같이 하자!” 주술사가 말했다. 주술사는 막대로 ‘딱’ 소리를 내며 춤을 추기 시작했다. 주술사의 동작은 마치 그가 처음에 소년을 알아봤을 때(소년이 춤을 춘다고 생각했을 때)의 소년의 동작과 같았다. 그러나 즐겁고 가볍게, 얼굴에 미소를 머금고, 몸의 긴장을 풀고 있는 채였다. 주술사는 막대를 부딪쳐 ‘딱’ 소리를 내는 동작을 춤 속에 집어넣었다(춤으로 바꾸었다). “같이 하자!” 그가 한 번 더 말했다.

The boy joined in and together they danced and laughed.
