I got an assignment in my class named "writing in plain English", but I am worried about whether my writing is good or not. Probably it' s no good. Please give me some advice!! The following is the homework.

Improve the sequence of ideas in the following sentence. Start like this: "In March 2000, Gilbert Spaulding applied to the Workforce Commission for extended unemployment benefits." Then use one or two extra sentences.

Kathcart filed the instant patent application on April 11, 2000, more than one year after he filed counterpart applications in Greece and Spain on November 21, 1998. Kathcart initially filed an application in the U.S. on November 22, 1997, claiming most of the same compounds as in the instant application. When he filed abroad, however, in 1998, he expanded his claims to include certain ester derivatives of the originally claimed compounds. It is the claims to these esters, which Kathcart has made the subject of a subsequent continuation-in-part application, the application now before the court, that are the issue here. Both foreign patents issued prior to the instant application in the U.S., the Greek patent on October 2, 1999, and the Spanish patent on January 21, 2000.

My answer is as follows.

Kathcart initially filed an application in the U.S. on November 21, 1997, claiming most of the same compounds as in the instant application.
After more than one year, he filed counterpart applications in Greece and Spain on November 21, 1998, when he expanded his claims to include certain ester derivatives of the originally claimed compounds. The Greek patent was permitted on October 2,1999 and the Spanish on January 21, 2000.
After that he filed the instant patent application in the U.S. on April 11, 2000. The issue here is that he has made these esters the subject of a subsequent continuation in part application.

i know my answer is not good, but I don't know how to correct it.
How do you rewrite the passage in chlonological order if you are in my place? Please give me some advice.

Kathcart submitted his first patent application in the US on November 22, 1997.

A year later, on November 21, 1998, he filed counterpart applications in Greece and Spain to include certain ester derivatives of the originally claimed compounds. The Greek patent was issued on October 2, 1999 and the Spanish patent on January 21, 2000.

On April 11, 2000, he filed the instant patent application in the US. This and the first application made in 1997, do not include the ester derivatives.

The issue here is the ester derivatives in the 1998 claim because they are not mentioned in all the other applications.

.... This is how I would put it in layman's terms. I don't know if I am using the correct terms but you get the idea. This was fun! Thanks!
