I think Japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn though I'm Japanese. I also think I wouldn't choose it to study if my mother language was not Japanese.
So, I want to ask all who study Japanese. Why do you study Japanese?
I'm really curious why you take Japanese though Japan is a small country and Japanese is only spoken in Japan.

I was raised in Japan, and my mom started teaching me when I was very young. When we came to America though, she wanted me to use English more, and we never spoke Japanese often in my later years. I decided to teach myself when I was in middle school.

I really enjoy languages, and one of my hobbies is to teach myself grammar and vocabulary. So I'm studying a lot. I really enjoy Japanese the most because although it is difficult, I think it's fun, and I love speaking it! I think my speaking is the most advanced, though I practice both everyday T_T Some native Japanese think I'm kidding them ^w^ and kanji is also fun to learn. I like to try reading Japanese newspapers. I can't understand most of it, but I learn kanji quickest this way.

Anyway, in America it seems to be a demanding language. The world is becoming more global, so many classes for Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, even Swahili are in many schools (at least, where I live. In my high school and college we have almost 20 to choose from).

And then, for some, you must consider the Japanese culture. Lots of people in America are introduced to Japanese culture whether they realize it or not, through anime, sushi, Sakura festivals, etc.

So, although you think your country is just a small place far away, where the official language is Japanese, a lot of people are interested in the small country's culture and demanding language!

I started studying Japanese mostly because I wanted to read the pretty magazines and mangas in their original language. After a while, I found it pretty fun and kept studying. Now, it gives me a little sense of achievement when I am able to read simple novels. ^__^
