Drinking Party
It's Wednesday today, and was what we call "Refresh day", when we are supposed to leave the office on time.
We can't (or I should say "don't have to") work overtime.
So, in many departments, a drinking party takes place on this day.
My department also hold it, and I had to participate in.
To tell you the truth, I want to go home without taking part in it, but everybody counted me in, so I had to "read the air".
:read the air = Japanese expression "空気を読む".
This means adjusting oneself to surrounding, without being selfish.
Are there similar expression in English?
And after all I got home such late.
Although the work was over at regular time, I felt tired much more than other days, when I have to work overtime about 2 or 3 hours.

There isn't really an English expression that corresponds to "空気を読む" - maybe we are more selfish, haha. "Read the atmosphere" is close but doesn't have the same connotations. Sometimes, less formally, we say "take one for the team" which is closer to your meaning.
You really took one for the team by going out drinking when you were tired! Don't work tooo hard ^^
