I have ridden in an ambulance car twice. In Japan, going to the hospital by ambulance is free, but don't forget they don't take you back home.

In the most cases, you may call an ambulance at night.

If you don't have someone follow you by car, you will have to pay an expensive fee like I did, or have to wait for the first train from the hospital.

In America, ambulances are expensive. Maybe $500 or more for a short ride.

To Bodhisamaya:

If we have to pay $500(45.000yen), I would hesitate to call ambulances.
Free for charge meaning it's both good and bad. There are people who call them as a taxi to the hospitals.
