New York had a heavy rain during the morning today.

So, I want to review my already known words and if someone tell me other words to describe rain, I really appreciate!

It was a downpour in the morning.
朝は、土砂降りの雨がふりました。
It was rainfall yesterday.
昨日は小雨でした。
Is "light rain" more commonly used??
It is a drizzle rain now.
今、霧雨が降っています。
Is using "mistry" more casual?
It was stormy in the evening"
夕方は暴風雨でした。

People say "it is dreary today." but, I an not sure which weather I can describe as dreary."
Can anyone teach me?

  • Is "light rain" more commonly used??
  • Is "light rain" more commonly used??"Light rain" is absolutely acceptable and still used today. You could also use "sprinkling."

  • It is a drizzle rain now.
  • It is a drizzle rain now.You can say it like this, but more commonly, people say: It is drizzling now.

  • Is using "mistry" more casual?
  • Is using "misty" more casual? For me, I would use "misty" for fog. But I live in Southern California, which is typically dry. So other parts of the country may use that word differently.Another word you could use is "drizzly."

  • People say "it is dreary today." but, I an not sure which weather I can describe as dreary."
  • People say, "It is dreary today", but I an not sure which weather I can describe as dreary."Dreary" would be an overcast day. Meaning, it's not raining, but it's quite cloudy and dark. And maybe cold, too. Just think of "dreary" as depressing, as it is also used to describe melancholy moods/emotions.

Another way you can describe rain, that you haven't mentioned here, is "raining cats and dogs." It may not be common to use anymore, but occasionally, you still hear people say it. It refers to rain, the kind with big, fat raindrops. If there is really heavy rain, you can say: It's raining cats and dogs out there! It doesn't seem to make sense, but it's a very old expression. Most people don't really remember where the phrase came from, but everyone knows what it means when you use it. =) Hope this helps.
