Cocktail Sauce

I had shrimps for dinner. I dipped them in cocktail sauce and ate them. A question was raised in my mind. Why do we call it "cocktail sauce"?
I searched using the Google but could not find the good answer. :-(
Even I do not the answer, as long as the cocktail sauce is tasty, I am happy. :-)
