Today, I read an interesting story about Australia.
To sum up the story, it is as following

An American couple traveling across Australia by car failed to signal
when makeing a turn and they were stopped by a police officer.
Noticing them as foreigner travelers, the officer just warned them with a soft smile.
Appreciating that, the American gave the officer thumb up.
As soon as he saw it, he got angry and gave them an expensive
ticket for it.

Generally, a thumb up says " You are the best"
Is that a really rude expression in Australia?
How bad is it? What does that mean exactly?
Is it as bad as the expression of rasing the middle finger??
How about giving the gesture "thumb down"?
As I know, it is used to tell something that disagree.
Does it have also different meaning in Australia?

Giving thumbs up in australia is not rude. That story surprises me. Maybe the policeman thinks the american was being disrespectful about the situation.

Is it not true?
It surprised me, too
Anyway, thanks for letting me know the truth!
