"She is shouting to a boy who is flying a model airplane."

In the sentence above, is it right to add "to" before a boy? Or removing "to" correct?

Which is correct?

  • Or removing "to" correct?
  • Or is removing "to" correct?

1 people think this correction is good.
Shout requires a direction so "to" (or preferably "at") is necessary.

Ying has given you a correct explanation based on the usage restrictions of the verb "shout". One needs to "shout" "to" or "at" a direction, or "shout" "about" some kind of topic.

Here is a structural explanation based on the sentence parts. "to a boy" is a NP:IO (Noun Phrase:Indirect Object). It requires a preposition, like "to", or "at". Here's your original sentence with an extra NP:DO (Noun Phrase:Direct Object), "her name", added to make things clearer:

"She is shouting her name to a boy who is flying a model airplane."

she --> NP:Subj
her name --> NP:DO
to a boy --> NP:IO
