Tomo : I got my IPad! (2)

I got my IPad! My aunt, who lives in the US visited my family last week.
I asked her if she would be able to get an IPad for me before she left. I was so excited when she told me that she got me IPad over the phone. Fiinally, my much anticipated IPad came to my home with my aunt. IPad is available only in the US market so far, because Apple has postponed the release date for non-US market due to the exceedingly-high demand in the US market. As usual, the design of Apple's product box was nice and cool. Unboxing an apple product is an exciting ritual. I removed the outer film off gently and lifted up the cover box. A glossy IPad, which was neatly sitting inside appeared. I gently removed it from the box and unwrapped the protection film off slowly. The IPad was a little smaller and heavier than I thought. However, it was so sleek and cool! I turned the power button on, and the screen directed me to connect the IPad with a computer for activation. I connected the IPad to my laptop with the provided cable connector and completed sync. Familiar-looking icons immediately appeared on the screen, because I am an IPhone user. The IPad detected the WiFi in my house, and I tapped the password to connect the network. Then I tapped the icon of the web-browser and enjoyed net-surfing for a while. I loved the the touch-screen interface. It was so smooth and responsive and very easy to operate. The screen was so crisp and clear, and I would like to download a movie from I-Tunes store. Anyway, I was very satisfied with my new gadget, and it would add some colors to my everyday life.

Tomo : My dog (0)

When I was a college student, my dog "Kuro" died. She looked fine in the previous day, but she died unexpectedly on the next day. In the morning, I came home from the convenience store, where I was working night shift as a part time job. I was tired and sleepy when I got home, and my mother was just preparing breakfast for me. Then she told me that Kuro barked a lot last night. Kuro sometimes barks at night time, so it was not unusual thing anyway, and I did not pay much attention to it. However, something inside of me moved my body, and the next moment I stood up and went to the backyard, where Kuro was in. It was a strange feeling, because I was tired from the work and just started eating breakfast, so I did not want to go see my dog. However, somehow my body automatically moved against my will, and I found myself going to the backyard. When I opened the door to the backyard, I saw Kuro laying down on the ground. She noticed me for a moment and lifted her head from the ground and wagged her tail a few times, but at the very next moment, her head sank suddenly into the ground and the tail stopped wagging. I ran up to her quickly and kept calling her name, but she was unconscious and the eyes looked fishy. She did not wake up again and soon after , she died. I believe that she called me before she died.

Tomo : The Future of the Auto Industry 2 (0)

The pressure for developing more fuel-efficient vehicles has been increasing more than ever before along with the rising international concern regarding to the global warming issue. Auto makers have been desperately researching and developing new ways to reduce consumption of petrol for their products. Using lightweight materials is an effective measure to meet the target. The approach will bring other positive outcomes as well. The acceleration and the agility of the car will be improved, and the car will be able to stop in shorter distance. The material which is generally used for auto body is steel, but aluminum is used for some expensive cars. An aluminum-made car is about 200 lbs lighter than a steel-made car. Furthermore, using carbon-fiber composite material for the body would even be able to shed the weight off more. The material is so light but very tough, and is used for the body of the Space-Shuttle. The cons are that the material is expensive and is difficult to shape it for an auto body. However, some industrial material makers have already developed a new method to shape the material more easily, and the cost of the material could be reduced by mass-production.

Tomo : Implementing a new system (0)

We are now busy to prepare for implementing a new logistic system. Our manager has cherished the idea of the new system for a long time, and she finally started undertaking the implementation. The implementation requires quite a lot of preparation. The software system needs to be revised, the work procedures must be readjusted, all the associates must be retrained and etc. In the general meeting, the manager emphasized the importance of the change repeatedly, because the new system is expected to improve efficiency and accuracy of our work. She also emphasized that whether the implementation would be successful or not totally depends on the commitment of each associate. At the same time, she appealed our cooperation and understanding for the change and told us not to be overtaken by skepticism. She also preached us the necessity to seek constantly for the ways to be more customer-orientated organization to stay competitive in the industry. Of course, some associates are skeptical about the change and want to stick with the current system. However, I share the same views with her, and I am ready to accept the new challenge.

Tomo : The Future of the Auto Industry (0)

As I am an associate of an automobile corporation, I am concerned about the future of my company. One of the major issues of the auto industry is, as you already know, the development of new cars to replace gasoline cars. Sooner or later, the production of crude oil will hit its peak and after that, it will only keep declining. In the industry, hybrid cars are considered to be a bridge, which connects the transformation from the era of gasoline cars to the era of electric cars. Of course, other alternative energy-driven cars are already available in the market. However, the dissemination of those cars vary depending upon each country because of their domestic factors. Diesel cars are currently popular in some European countries, and bio-ethanol cars are prevalent in Brazil. However, the majority of the people in the auto industry share the consensus that electric cars will be the the central player in the next generation. Currently, two types of electric cars are developed by auto makers. One is the so-called "plug-in", and the other is a fuel-cell car. Both have pros and cons and at this moment, so no one knows which technology will prevail in the next generation. I wish my company could stay competitive in the race of the development of the new energy sourced-cars!

Tomo : Perception gap? (0)

The other day, I visited my friend's apartment. He shares the room with his roommate. When I got there, his roommate was just watching a movie, and we joined him. I did not know the title of the movie, but it was a CG movie. In the scene, a honey bee was hovering around the flowers and collecting honey. The CG was so good, and the honey bee looked like real one. All of a sudden, a ferocious huge yellow jacket emerged and attempted to attack the honey bee. The honey bee had narrowly escaped from the attack by dodging swiftly and fled desperately. However, the yellow jacket immediately turned the body, and started chasing the honey bee. The yellow jacket could fly faster than the honey bee, and the gap between the two was closing little by little. The honey bee was almost caught, but the honey bee managed to escape by swerving the body to the right or the left. At last, the honey bee's nest came into sight, and the honey bee succeeded to rush into the nest a split second faster than the chaser.
While I was watching the whole scene, I screamed within my mind "run!, run!, hurry!, hurry!". I felt relieved as I saw the honey bee made the escape, and I leaned back in the couch. At that moment, I heard "tsk" from somewhere. I turned my head slightly to find out who did it. It was the roommate. He glared the TV screen with chagrined eyes. I was quite surprised at the fact that he sympathized with the yellow jacket but not the honey bee! I realized while I was screaming within my mind "run!, run!, run!", he was probably screaming within his mind "get it!, get it!, get it!, right next to me. I guess we have a huge gap between us!

Tomo : Surprising! (0)

I ordered an electronic gadget on the internet. Today, I received the shipment notification mail. I clicked the tracking number which was attached to the e-mail to locate my item. I was surprised when I found the location where my item was initially shipped from. It was Shenzhen in China! Well, I was not surprised with the location itself, since I knew that the company had an assembling plant in China. However, I was surprised with the fact that they directly shipped the product from the place where they assembled it. I thought they would initially ship the product to the U.S, where their main office is located, and then would ship the product from there. Of course, shipping the item directly from the place where they assemble is more efficient though.

Tomo : It's not fair! (1)

It was a busy day yesterday. I finished my work and started wrapping up to leave for home, but my boss stopped me and gave me work. It was easy work and would not take much time to finish. However, it was only a couple minutes before to 6 p.m. I am a wage worker, and my work hours are 9a.m. to 6p.m. If I took the work on, I would need to stay another 10 minutes or so. I did not mind staying as far as I would get paid. However, the minimum increments of my company is 15 minutes. So unless you stay for 15 minutes or longer, you will not be paid for the overtime. Besides, this was not the first time he gave me work at the last minute before I leaving for home. I honestly told him I did not want to stay unless I would get paid for the overtime. However, as soon as I said so, his face grew red with anger, and he grossly told me to go home. My boss has an attitude problem!

Tomo : Joining Twitter (0)

Twitter has become a social phenomenon now. Countless numbers of people have joined and are twittering all over the world. Many of them enjoy twittering and being addicted. On the other hand, some people cannot find the attractiveness of using the social networking system, and I am one of them. More than a month has passed since I joined Twitter. I typed in short bursts and waited for someone's feedback. But I did not get any response. It made me feel like talking to a wall! So I stopped tweeting. I guess unless you tweet to a specific individual or a group, you may feel the emptiness of tweeting, or have I just not found yet the fun part of twittering yet?

Now my sister-in-law is visiting Japan. She has stayed for 10days and is going back to the US the day after tomorrow. She is busy shopping for souveniors. She bought some T-shirts on which Kanji characters written. I guess it is a popular item for non-Japanese tourists as a souvenir, because I have seen many foreign tourists who wearing the same kind of T-shirts. My brother asked her if she wanted to go anyplace before leaving for home. I was a bit surprised at her answer. Because she wanted to go to "Hachiko Crossroad". "Hachiko Crossroad" is a very famous crossroad, which is located at the center of commercial area of Shibuya. She had seen the crossroad in a movie and wanted to go there if she had the chance. "Hachiko crossroad" is a very busy crossroad. When the lights turn to green, so many pedestrians start crossing the streets heading to their own destination at the same time. The sight is amazing!

Tomo : Visiting Japan 2 (1)

My sister-in-law is visiting Japan now. Two days ago, she, my brother and my mother went to Hakone, that is about 70 miles away from the center of Tokyo. They stayed at a Japanese-style hotel. While there, my sister-in-law slept on a futon. It was the first time for her sleeping on a futon. The dinner was "Kaiseki", which was originally a simple meal served during the traditional tea ceremony. Of course, she had never tasted kaiseki before, and my mother and my brother were a little worried her if she could eat it. However, she enjoyed the dinner and finished all the dishes. After the dinner, she and my mother went to a common bathing area, where you take a bath with others. Their room has own bathroom though she wanted to try the common bath. My mother told me that she looked a little awkward while she was bathing, but it is understandable!

My sister-in-law is now visiting Japan. She was born and grew up in Mexico and was naturalized in the US. This is her first visiting Japan and she is curious about everything. Today, she, my mother and my brother visited Meiji-jingu, which is a very famous shrine garden which is situated in Harajuku.
While there, they happened to see a bride and a bridegroom who dressed in the traditional Japanese wedding kimonos being led by a priest to the main shrine. A couple of foreign tourists, as well as my sister-in-law, were taking pictures of the scene. I have only seen such scenes on TV or in movies. So, I guess that she was probably welcomed by the Kami-sama (the God)!

Tomo : Peak Oil (0)

Recently, I read the book "The Last Oil Shock" by an English journalist.
In the book, the author warns us that we will face peak oil within this one or
two decades. So called "peak oil" is the point at which maximum global petroleum extraction is reached, and the rate of production enters a permanent decline.
The author warns that it will cause catastrophic chaos in our society if we do not compensate for the decline. Using various scientific data, the author tries to prove that peak oil will occur in the very near future. At the same he suggests possible countermeasures.
The content of the book was so serious and heavy that I was depressed for
a while after finishing it. However, I think the book is a must to read for everyone.

Tomo : Blue Monday (0)

When I heard the English expression "blue Monday" for the first time, I realized that people feel the same way no matter where you go.
In Japan, there is a similar expression "Sazae-san syndrome".
"Sazae-san" is a very popular and long-running cartoon program, which is broadcast on Sunday evenings. When "Sazae-san" starts, the viewers are reminded that the weekend is almost over.
I also get the same feeling on Sunday evenings and Monday mornings, but once I get to work, the feeling disappears. This might sound a little ridiculous, but I sometimes imagine how I would use the money if I hit the lottery. I imagine that I would quit my job and buy this, that and do this, that and the list goes on.
However, what if I could keep the feeling I get on Friday nights seven days a week?
I would be happy all the time and would not need to hit the lottery anymore!
But wait a minute, I feel happy on Friday night precisely because I worked hard for the week and can now look forward to a two day weekend.
But if I hit the lottery and quit my job, everyday is a weekend, and I would not get the feeling on Friday nights anymore because there would be no more 5 hard working days!
Mmm, this is deep!
Thanks to all of you!
Now, I am starting to understand the tendency of my frequent errors.

I often forget to add or choose wrong articles like "a, an, the".
I choose a singular form of noun when it has to be a plural form or vice versa.
I make some preposition choice mistakes and sometimes choose a
wrong tense form of a word.
Some of my expressions do not sound natural to English native
speakers.

So, what is the solution?

I will continue posting my journals on Lang-8!

I received a new Patagonia shirt, which I ordered on the internet.
Patagonia is an apparel company in the U.S. that is widely recognized
for its commitment to protecting the environment. They only use
organically grown cotton for their products, which gives their shirts a soft and tender feel.
Once I felt the gentle texture of organic cotton, I no longer wanted to wear
clothes made from chemically treated textiles.
However, wearing Patagonia is not without sacrifice. Their products are a little pricey for casual wear and are not as durable as clothes which are
made from non-organic textiles.
However, I love their products and will remain a loyal customer.

The download speed of books is quick and it takes
less than 30 seconds.
A couple of points which I hope they improve are the responsivness of the
touch screen, which is little dull, and the dictionary function, which only
looks up the words in original forms.
Overall, I am pretty much pleased with the product and I will take it with me on my next business trip!
