It has been so long since I studied Japanese in a serious manner that I have begun to forget some of the grammar rules. I begin taking Japanese 2 this semester (which starts August 25th) and I must refresh my memory before then.

I have set my eyes on taking the JLPT test this year. It implements a new system this year. There were 4 levels before. Now there are 5. The new level is an intermediate step between what used to be level 2 and level 3 which are now level 2 and level 4.

If I start buckling down and studying fiercely, I can most likely pass level 4 (which used to be level 3) come this December when the test takes place. However, if I take it easy, I know that I will be able to pass level 5 (the old level 4) easily. I would prefer to pass level 4, so, let's hope I don't get lazy or weighed down by my other classes this semester.

This semester I will be taking Japanese 2 as previously stated, as well as Music Appreciation (which I took last semester and failed because I forgot to take the final. I had an A in the class! Shame on me!), Intro to US Government (This is going to be a snoozer), History and Appreciation of Cinema (which seems mildly exciting), and I might be taking the Principles of Biology as well as Biology Lab. The books for the biology classes as well as lab fees are expensive and I am not receiving any financial aid this semester, so, I most likely will drop these before the semester starts and take these when I have the funds to obtain the books.

On a bit of an unrelated note:
I started listening to Enka today. I had heard of the genre a few times before, but never tried listening to it. It turns out, I had once actually done an Enka song in choir during my freshman year of high school. The song was Koujou no Tsuki (荒城の月.) I really liked that song when we performed it. It was my favorite of the concert we sang it in.

Anyway, I will (hopefully) start using Lang8 a bit more to help study Japanese as well as help people who need help with English. (Wow, I used help a lot in that sentence.) On another unrelated note: It's almost 6am and I haven't slept yet. It seems the only time I write journals is when I'm not sleeping when I should be.

Good luck with the JLPT! I want to help you. I don't think 荒城の月 belongs to Enka genre. Exactly it's an amazing song which we can be proud of as a Japanese music, though. My image of Enka is as follows.

Good luck on your Japanese. If you have a question, please ask me!

I think the song 荒城の月 is refered to "Japanese folk song".

I remember the song was on our music text book when I was in junior high school.
All most all Japanese know the song.
I was really surprised that you know this song and had sung before.

Ah! My mistake. 荒城の月 was on the English version of the Enka page but I misread the entry. It's on there due to the musical scale it was written with, not for being an Enka song.

That's interesting that Japanese children sing this in school. We sang some American folk songs when I was in elementary school actually. Talking about this is making me remember one of them.

As for other Enka songs, I really like this one.

I would like to learn how to sing in that style. With a trill/vibrato in the vocals.

Thank you for introducing a good song and his singing and playing is really good. Do you call it a folk song? I thought this style is called country music.
Enka is not popular among young people in Japan and I don't like it very much, too.
