What kind of monolingul dictionaries should non-native English speakers use?

As non-native speakers of English, what kind of monolingual dictionaries should they use? Some suggest using such ESL dictionaries as Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary and Longman Dictionary of Contemporary, whereas others strongly oppose consulting such dictionaries. They hold that the definitions of ESL dictionaries are simplistic or even childish. "Native speakers of English would never define meanings of words in such an imbecilic manner," they said. ESL dictionaries weaken learner's (depth of ) thinking and impede their writing abilities. Use dictionaries that native speakers use, such as Oxford Dictionary of English (not OED)or Merriam-Webster instead. How are your opinions?
