Are romances necessary in RPGs?

I found an interesting topic in a Japanese internet forum titled same as this entry.
Some said "I want romances with pretty and beautiful heroines in games.", and others said, "I hate to be forced to fall in love with heroines whom I don't like."
I'd rather prefer to RPGs with simple "Save the heroine" stories, than those with "Save the world" stories.
On the other hand, I understand the latter opinion, especially when the heroine has a strong personality, sometimes childish, and I don't like her at all.
So I like the RPGs which have romances for sub-quests and the player can choose a heroine from some like Dragon Age; Origin.=)

i don't think it's necessary. nor do i think it's very prevelent in rpg's.
various romances is fun.
but like you said if your mission is to save some childish chick then i might rather pass.

Thank you for your comments.=)
I think romances are really common especially in so called JRPG like FF series. Also I think almost all of heroines are what you call "childish chick"s.lol Japanese Otakus really love childish chicks in fact...

i played all the final fantasies lol. FFVII and up definitely all have romance but before that i'm not sure whether there was.

in FFV i feel like i remember some guy thinking he is gay for the pirate faris, then later realizes he actually is straight because faris turns out to be a chick....lmao. not sure though. haven't played the early FF's since i was in elementary school.

Yeah, as you say, the first some arts of FF series may have had no romance. I'm not sure because I played only FF3 of the series. So I'm very surprised at your playing all of the series.=)
