In the above sentence,

I don't understand why the writer used the word "and that.."

Couldn't he just write as "... and the scene was contained" ?

I happened to grab and to read a book called "Lincoln's Speechs and Writings" today.

and I'm still on the first page. I can't even go to the next page because

it is so hard for me to understand -_-;;;;;;;;

So many big words and complicated sentences....
