Who Do You Think You Are?
It's a one hour television program on BBC to trace one's ancestors. Discovering one's ancestors means getting to know oneself better.
I am always attracted to the story of my ancestors by my parents, especially from my dad's side. My maternal relatives are native Indonesians and have been a family of farmers since they can remember. So, nothing interesting about them.
My paternal great great grandparents were merchants. They were China born immigrants. They came to this country for trading and to run from oppression in their mainland. My paternal great grandmother was shipped from China to marry a man she never met, whom was my paternal great grandfather. WOW! What a story! This arrange marriage thing is interesting to dig more. Too bad, my dad can't tell further. He has vague memory about them because they died when he was little.
My paternal grandfather was born in Singapore. He was a businessman. He spoke and read Chinese, and could speak and read Indonesian too! I wish he passed his Chinese language skill to my dad. He died when I was at elementary school.
Sometimes, I wonder, had the independence war didn't occur, my paternal great grandparents and their families would pass their fortune to me. I wish I was born in a rich family, not a had been rich family. I would have a different life if it happened.
My paternal grandfather passed a huge family tree book to my father. This book has been passed from the first son to the first son. It will be mine one day. It's written in Chinese.
Too bad, I don't understand it at all.

It's a one hour television program from the BBC about tracing one's ancestors.
I am always attracted to the story of my ancestors from my parents, especially from my Dad's side.
So, nothing interesting from them. [ I guess there are interesting things about farming though? ]
They were immigrants from China.
My paternal great grandmother emigrated from China to marry a man she never met, my paternal Great Grandfather.
This arranged marriage thing is interesting to research further.
Too bad, my Dad doesn't know any more about it.
He has only a vague memory about them because they died when he was little.
He was bilingual with Chinese and Indonesian.
I wish he had passed his Chinese language skills to my Dad.
Sometimes, I wonder, if the Independence War had not occured, if my paternal great grandparents and their families would have passed their fortune on to me.
I wish I had been born into a rich family, not a had-been-rich family.
I would have had a different life if that had happened.
>> I guess there are interesting things about farming though?
Yes, I think nothing is interesting about farming. If the farmer is rich, that would be interesting LOL.
I know how you feel, my family is not rich in Japan. Naturally word is unfair for us. But if you study Japanese hard, if I study English hard, our futures will be happy.
"So, nothing interesting from them."
Don't say that, farming is the most important thing for humankind.
No matter how great scientific techniques we can find, farming is still important.
I agree with you and I'll ask my mom about my maternal ancestors ;)
