[question] What verb word do you use as 'to recognize the commonality'?

PUBLIC_FLAG_#{@journal.pf_int} RSS feed of gyutaku's latest journal entries Mar 06th 2010 07:46 correct-me question
I learned the words 'distinguish' and 'differentiate', these are translated as '区別する' into Japanese.

According to LDOCE, these two means below.

===quote===
distinguish [verb]
to recognize and understand the difference between two or more things or people

differentiate [verb]
to recognize or express the difference between things or people
===unquote===

Both mean 'to recognize the difference between somethings'

Then, I wonder if there is a word which means 'to recognize the commonality between somethings'.

If the question make sense, would you tell me the answer?

Thanks in advance. :)

I think that "relate" could be used to mean "to recognize the commonality between things."

"Compare" is the closest word I can think of, although it's not exactly just to recognize the similarities in things. It's about noticing both their similarities and differences at the same time.

You could also say something like "associate" or "connect," which would be kind of like finding how two things have something in common. So you can say, "doctors associate/connect smoking with lung cancer." It doesn't mean they're the same, but it means there's a connection between the two things.

Thank you two for giving comments.
It seems that my word choice 'commonality' was not exact for my question.
What the case I wanted to say as 'to recognize the (some word)' is, for example 'I finally found out that he is the person who have given me a lot of help without telling who he/she is.
(to recognize A is the same as B)

Anyway your information help me to improve my English.
Thanks a lot!
