I was told by an American drummer that the voice of the vocalist in my rock band is "raspy voice" and he loves it.

I think the quintessential raspy voice is Louis Armstrong. Listen to 'What a Wonderful World'--it's a great song and you can hear the raspy, rough, sand-papery-ness of his voice.
