大船渡でのボランティア活動について朝礼の演説。

Good Morning. おはようございます。　　　　　

The Touhoku Earthquake Disaster was one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern times.

東北大震災災害は、ご存知のように、最も破壊的な災害の１つでした。

I remember seeing it on the television back in Brisbane and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was and still is such a difficult time for Japan's people.

地震と津波についてのテレビ放送を見ることをよく思い出しました。はじめに、見たことを信じられなかった！段々つらい顛末がもっとはっきりになられて、日本の人々に、大変な苦しみが当たりました。

I was also reminded of the Queensland floods that occurred just 2 months previous and the lives lost and the destruction that was still evident in my city.

同時に２ヶ月前の国元のクイーンズランド州の洪水災害のことを思い直した。西クイーンズランドの死傷者と私のブリスベン市の大規模な破壊を考えました。

Three months later I was off to Japan about to be a public servant with the JET Program as an ALT.

3ヶ月後、JETプログラムの新しいALTと言う公僕の私が日本へ向かっていました。

An ALT's role is to not only teach a foreign language in Japanese schools, it is also to promote international exchange at the local level.

ALTは、外国語の教師だけではなくて、地域レベルの国際交流のため、日本とオーストラリアと他の西洋の国との相互理解の増進という目的です。

Exchange is a two-way street and it is just as important that I learn as much as I can from Japanese people and promote this back in my country.

交流は相互ですので、日本人から色んな教えたことを学ぶのは、ちょうど同じように大切です。

I have learnt some aspects of Japanese culture, language and customs from the people of Tsushima.

今まで、津島の人のおかげで、日本の文化、言語と習慣のいくつかの面を学ばれました。

However the most impressive things I have learnt and witnessed is the tenacity, compassion and co-operative spirit/ethos exhibited by the Japanese people and particularly the youth of Tsushima.

しかし、私にとって、日本人、とくに津島の若者、の同情と協力的な気風を示したことはもっとも印象的なことです。

Your deep compassion for others that are experiencing hardships is very heartwarming to me.

皆さんが余人のことを深い同情に入るのことは本当に心強いです。

You have worked so hard towards both raising money for the Touhoku victims and you participated in volunteer activities in Ofunato.

皆は、東北の罹災者のため、金を一所懸命調えて、大船渡でボランティア活動に参加しました。

When I read the list of volunteers I was really surprised at the number of student participants. I was glad at the impressive participation.

ボランティアのリストを読む時に、生徒の参加者の数人に驚きました。すごい参加で喜びました。

On top of this, I was very proud of the way that you all conducted yourselves, you didn't complain at all and just focussed on doing a good job for Ofunato.

その上、皆の行動を誇りにしています。遠乗りと力仕事を、苦情なし遂げました。大船渡のため、一所懸命手伝いました。

It is nice to know that the sense of community extends further than prefectural borders.

日本人のコミュニティーの観念は、国中に及んでいます。良いことですね。

It reminds me a lot of home and I feel happy.

これを考えると故郷のことを思い出し、幸せになります。

The volunteering activities that we did in Ofunato reminded me of volunteer activities that I participated in in flood-destroyed areas in Brisbane in January.

大船渡でのボランティア活動はブリスベン洪水災害のボランティア活動を思い出しました。

The community and cooperation in difficult times is a very Australian quality and for a moment I felt like I was amongst fellow countrymen in Ofunato.

つらい時にオーストラリア人はいつも、一緒に盛り返します。津島のコミュニティー・メンバー、神守中の先生と生徒たちは大船渡に支援をしました。そうすれば、大船渡の活動中に、皆はオーストラリア人の同胞っぽいと、時々おもいました。

After I return to Australia I want to share these type of experiences with my fellow Australians.

オーストラリアに帰国する後、こういう風の体験について伝えたいです。

Thanks for helping Touhoku and thanks for providing me a good opportunity for learning one of the facets of the Japanese nature.

東北の罹災者に支援して、活動で日本人の１つの性格の一面を教えてもらいました。ありがとうございます。
