  • I asked them that do I need object before than, and they said no I don't need it.
  • I asked him/her whether I need an object before "than", and he/she said that I don't need it. [Alternative: ... said "no, you don't need it."]
  • Choose "him" or "her" as appropriate. When you know the gender of the person you are talking about, it is incorrect to use the plural pronoun "them" for a single person.

  • Before, I just heard that an western people was saying that you know more than you think.
  • Before, I just heard that a European/American was saying that "you know more than you think."
  • Choose one of "European" or "American" as appropriate. There is no natural word in English which includes both. "... a western person..." is grammatically correct ("person" is the singular noun corresponding to the plural noun "people"), but not natural. When you quote the exact words said by someone, don't precede the quotation by "that", and enclose the quotation in quotation marks.
