English Conversation

I always think speaking English is more difficult than writing one as well as listening. This is just because I had learned how to write or read English for a long time through the education at school. On the other hands, I had never learned to speak English until coming to NY.

However, I have got used to talk with someone about business or economy in English because a similar type of conversation had been recurred and I have remembered some key words to be required in those conversation, even though I have to learn a grammar such as "tense", "article" and "preposition" so that I can use them correctly.

As for daily conversation, it's another story.
I can't give a correct answer to the question that is thrown at me immediately because I can't think of proper words to say.
Considering this case, I think it might be important for me to learn verbs like hell before learning grammar.

So let me ask you a question.

What should I emphasize when I try to get better at speaking English?

I'm going to learn grammar utilizing this website though...

Very nicely done. I'm of the opinion that you should learn lots of words, and learn grammar through using and listening to English. This way you learn grammar the way English is spoken, and not the way it is taught in textbooks, which is often different. I'm trying the same thing with Japanese. ^^ Good luck!

Hello Tomosuke-san,

Thank you for posting your message.

Your question: *What should I emphasize when I try to get better at speaking English?
I think there is really only one proven method. And that is to
practice speaking real conversation with native speakers. Practice,
practice and more practice. If you could practice speaking English
every day, I believe you would quickly see progress. Of course, it is not
easy to find practice partners, especially with the busy lives that many of
us lead, but this site is an excellent place to start. Skype is an excellent tool
for language practice...the ability to speak and also type messages is just great.

Anyway, that's my view.

Thank you for correcting my journal and nice advice. I'm going to try to read some easy books to increase vocabulary. Other than this, do you have any good idea to increase my vocabulary?

Thank you for your helpful advice.
I speak English almost everyday because our office staffs are non-Japanese speaker. But they got used to talking with Japanese and they can understand what we really want to say. They are patient with our broken English.
Their permissive attitude prevents me from awaking abusage.(Off course, they are not English teacher...) Anyway, I'm going to continue to practice conversation. And I will consider adoption of skype.
