I have two daughters who came to Australia from Korea with family 2and half years ago.
They are going to public school which is multicultural.
When my first girl enter a school, I thought that how can I help her to improve English? And I decide to let her speak English as often as possible. After a few days, I heard something which I never thought from teacher. She said that when you in house with your children, should speak your language each other as often as possible. “WHAT?” I cannot believe that why she said like that?
“Maybe she does not know about how important can be speaking English fluently as soon as possible in Australia as foreigner”. When I thought like this, she started explain you do not worry about to improve English of your children. It will be to develop naturally and just worry about to forget your language because a lot of children who is immigrant will have been forgetting own languages.
After the day, we use only Korean language in the house instead I have often to deter their speaking English.

나는 2년6개월 전에 가족과 함께 한국에서 호주로 온 두 딸이 있습니다.
그들은 다문화학교인 공립학교에 다니고 있습니다.
첫 째 아이가 학교에 입학할 때, 나는 어떻게 그 아이의 영어실력을 향상시키게 도울 수 있을까 생각했고 가능한 자주 영어로 말하게 하기로 결심했습니다. 며칠 후, 나는 선생님으로부터 전혀 생각지 않던 것을 들었습니다. 그녀 말이 당신이 집에 아이들과 함께 있을 땐 가능한 한 자주 한국어를 사용하라고 했습니다. “뭐라고?” 나는 왜 그녀가 그렇게 애기하는지 믿을 수가 없었습니다.
“그녀는 아마도 외국인이 호주에서 가능한 한 빨리 영어를 유창하게 말할 수 있게 되는 것의 중요성을 모르고 있을 거야”라고 생각했습니다. 내가 이렇게 생각하고 있을 때, 그녀는 자녀의 영어향상에 대해 걱정하지 말라고 설명을 시작했습니다. 영어는자연스럽게 향상될 것이고 단지 모국어를 잃어버리지 않도록 조심하라고 했습니다 왜냐하면 많은 이민 온 어린이들이 모국어를 잃어가고 있기 때문이랍니다. 그날 이후에 우리는 집에선 오직 한국어를 사용합니다 오히려 그들의 영어사용을 자주 막아야 합니다.

They are going to public school which is multicultural. They are going to a multicultural public school.
When my first girl entered a school, I thought that "How can I help her to improve her English?"
And So I decided to let her speak English as often as possible.
After a few days, I heard something which I never thought I'd hear from the teacher.
She said that when you in house at home with your children, you should speak your language with each other as often as possible.
“WHAT?” I cannot believe she said that! that why she said like that?
“Maybe she does not know about how important can be speaking English fluently as soon as possible in Australia as foreigner”. Maybe she does not realize that speaking English fluently as soon as possible is very important to a foreigner living in Australia.
When I thought like this, she started explain you do not worry about to improve English of your children. When I expressed my thoughts to the teacher, she explained that I should not worry about improving my children's English.
It will be to develop naturally and just worry about to forget your language because a lot of children who is immigrant will have been forgetting own languages. She said that their English skills will develop naturally, and that I should just worry about ensuring they don't forget their native language. Apparently, a lot of immigrant children forget their own languages.
After the day, we use only Korean language in the house instead I have often to deter their speaking English. Since then, we speak only Korean at home, and I often have to deter them from speaking English.
She said that when you in house are at home with your children, you should speak your language with each other as often as possible.
“WHAT?” I cannot believe that why she would said like say that?
