Inspired by Shin's entry, I'm writing this to support Japanese learners [in, of, from?] all over the world. I sometimes notice that Japanese learners don' know enough natural expressions (even?) though their Japanese is quite good. A tip I can provide is 'connecting words' such as "Uh...Erm...Um...", "Well...", "Let me see", and so on.

This is what I recorded on April 24 for a Chinese friend in Shanghai.

Waow *^0^*)/ Yuri I like your voice ^^ The song has a little bit of Marilyn Monroe's sensuality in it :D You should try this more often :) Thanks for the lesson and the information about youku. I didn't know that youtube etc. were prohibited in China... but I guess I understand why (= facebook did helped foment revolution in Egypt and Tunisia). Goodnight ;)

Thanks for the audio recording.

I know natural Japanese expressions when I hear them, but unfortunately I can't remember them when I'm creating sentences of my own.

When I hear Japanese I understand the meaning in English, making it difficult for me to pick up new phrases--the Japanese doesn't remain in my head long enough to be memorized long-term.

Also, in the recording you said 「「ギターは私は上手ではないけどとても好き」. In school I was taught to say 「得意」 instead of 「上手」 when referring to something that oneself is good at. Is 「得意じゃない」 better than 「上手じゃない」?

I also haven't been frequenting lang-8. I happened to log in today for the first time in a while, so your response is just in time.

I think 得意 is similar to "specialty". Having a "specialty" means you are good at an activity because you spend lots of time doing it. If you didn't enjoy it you probably wouldn't spend so much time on it.

I think my teacher was teaching us how to respond to questions formally, which is why she didn't teach us to use 上手. 得意 is more eloquent than 上手, but I think in informal conversations with friends 上手 might be more natural.

For example:

あるひと:バスケットボールが上手?したい?
友達:はい、なかなかできる。行こう。

Jul 25th 2011 19:34 Yuri
んー,自然な会話では,

Aさん:バスケってする/バスケ好き/バスケ出来る?
Bさん:うん、一応できるよ。今度,行こっか?

「上手」って言葉は褒めるときにしか使わない気がしてきた…。あるいは,本人がいない場所で「あの人のスペイン語,上手(だと思う)?」とか。私の印象では,本人に尋ねる場合,「する?」とか「できる?」を使うなぁ。

控えめに言うために「一応」を付ける人は多いよ☆

Thanks for posting the audio and the transcript to go with it. It was really helpful and an interesting way to learn!
