Go To Florida!

I signed up San Do's ( San Do is my American painting teacher of porcelain. I am planning to take his class in 2012.) private class today. To tell you the truth, my American painting friend, Gay called him yesterday and signed up for me though. She and I were planning to take his class in January in 2012 first. However, San sent us an e-mail and asked us if we could take his class in June. Although Gay did not like going to Florida ( His painting studio is in Florida.) in June because it is humid and hot, I persuaded her. It was the issue of last week.

Gay and I have exchanged lots of e-mails about our plan in these two weeks . Since it will be over one year from now to take San's class, we do not have exact plan. However, we think about it. Gay told me that it might be fun for us to rent a house. After class we will go around auctions, Disney, shopping malls and antique shops. I would like to go to America three times next year to take some painting classes in Michigan, Florida and Arizona.

Although I can not take some classes in Oregon this year, I might be able to take some classes there next year after Michigan school. That's because the dates of both schools are close to each other. So, if it would be possible, I would like to take some classes in Oregon after the Michigan school. I have been expecting I will receive lots of information in both Michigan and Arizona schools this year.

  • Go To Florida!
  • I will go to Florida! (or: "I will be going to Florida!" because "Going to Florida!" may suggest you are going to Florida NOW or in a very near future. However, sometimes such sentences are actually more about emotion (sudden, unexpected joy) than about precise distance in time. For example "Oh, gosh! I'm going to Florida! I can't believe it!" is more about the joy someone is expressing NOW, already anxious to see Florida, rather than about a true distance in time, and we actually don't know if it will happen this week or next year. Still, from such a happy perspective it may seem as if it was in a few hours or tomorrow, so I would see it as correct. )

  • I signed up San Do's ( San Do is my American painting teacher of porcelain.
  • I have signed up today for San Do's private class. (or: Today I have signed up for San Do's private class. ) (San Do is the name of my American porcelain painting teacher.)

  • I am planning to take his class in 2012.) private class today.
  • I intend to take his class in 2012.

  • To tell you the truth, my American painting friend, Gay called him yesterday and signed up for me though.
  • To tell you the truth, actually, it was my American painting friend, Gay who called him yesterday and had signed up for me.

  • She and I were planning to take his class in January in 2012 first.
  • Originally we were planning to take his class in January 2012.

  • Although Gay did not like going to Florida ( His painting studio is in Florida.) in June because it is humid and hot, I persuaded her.
  • Gay did not like the idea of going to his Florida painting studio in June, because June is hot and humid in Florida, but I've managed to persuade her.

  • It was the issue of last week.
  • It was the top issue of last week. (or: It was last week's issue number 1.)

  • Gay and I have exchanged lots of e-mails about our plan in these two weeks .
  • Gay and I have exchanged many (a whole lot of) e-mails about our plans in the last two weeks. (While "lots of" is correct and "many" is suggested just as an alternative, I think that using "plans" in plural (rather than a single plan) would be more natural.)

  • Since it will be over one year from now to take San's class, we do not have exact plan.
  • Since it is more than a year from now before we can actually take San's class, we do not have an exact (or: a complete) plan yet.

  • However, we think about it.
  • However, we are already thinking about it.

  • Gay told me that it might be fun for us to rent a house.
  • Gay suggested that that renting a house for our stay there might be convenient for us and a lot of fun too.

  • After class we will go around auctions, Disney, shopping malls and antique shops.
  • After class we would go to auctions, Disney, shopping malls and antique shops. (Unless you promised yourselves you will go to those auctions for sure (as in "we must go to auctions when we are there"), "would", "plan to", "intend to", etc. would be more natural while the plans are in the future).

  • Although I can not take some classes in Oregon this year, I might be able to take some classes there next year after Michigan school.
  • Although I won't [will not] be able to take some classes in Oregon this year, I might be able to take some classes there next year, after the Michigan school (or: after the course [study; classes] in Michigan).

  • That's because the dates of both schools are close to each other.
  • This is because the dates (or: the terms) of both courses are too close to each other (or: overlap; are conflicting with each other; are almost in the same period of time). (Although some courses (classes) are sometimes called "schools" (as in "a summer school of drawing and painting"), usually we see schools as something present over a long period of time, often meaning the actual building or place rather than a short-term activity starting in spring and ending (finishing its function; ceasing to exist) for example in autumn. If you accept "school" in such a meaning as a long-term concept, then school exists (usually over a period of many years) and it is organising lessons, classes, courses and other educational activities. Strict limitation in time is in nature of classes and courses; for example they may start on May 1 and may end on June 30, but the school that is organising them is continuing its existence after the course is finished and organising some future courses (we hope). Unless you insist that both of these courses are really called "schools", you should rather use some other word (course, classes, etc.).

  • So, if it would be possible, I would like to take some classes in Oregon after the Michigan school.
  • So, if possible, I would like to take some classes in Oregon after the course in Michigan.

  • I have been expecting I will receive lots of information in both Michigan and Arizona schools this year.
  • I expect (or: "I'm sure that..."; "I really hope that...") that I will learn a lot during these courses, both in Michigan and in Arizona next (or: this [if you mean 2011]) year.

Yumi-san, I'm sorry for not correcting any of your journals yet. I am usually very limited with time and I generally avoid long journals on lang-8, because in most cases I would only be able to make partial corrections. Correcting long journals is also more difficult, as most of mistakes are not simple typing errors, but rather the nuances of meaning, style, consistency and actual English usage and I think that such corrections should be made by native English speakers or at least good English teachers. Having this in mind, please treat any of my corrections as a form of friendly advice (suggestions) rather than actual corrections, as some of them may actually be wrong. Still, I hope that some of these comments may be useful to you. Wishing you a nice day and a lot of fun with your studies.

Thanks for the wonderful correction and the suggestion, Ted. You really don't need to think that you have to correct my journal entries. However, thank you so much! I could learn a lot from your suggestions.
