I think more people know colitis than cecum. Almost everyone knows what appendicitis is. Using -itis to end things makes it clear to English natives that it is a disease, even if it isn't a real one.
Ex: senioritis , tonsillitis

"Which is better, colon or intestine?"
If you are describing the area of just the appendix, colon is better. If you are describing the entire area, then use intestine.

Ex: His colon was inflamed, the doctor said it was colitis.
His intestines were inflamed, the doctor said it was colitis.
The first refers to a small area, the second refers to all of his intestines.

Adding "-itis" to the organs make disease name.
In Japan, we generally tell "盲腸" instead of "虫垂炎".
I'm afraid people don't distinguish the words between the cecum and the appendix.
