In the US, some of cars are driven with plate of store name instead of license number.
It’s possible until the shop gets a license number for the car.
This system can’t be imagined in Japan because it has possibility to increase fake plates.

Since others have corrected your very nice entry already; I have simply added other ways of saying the same thing. :-)

I think that the time you are allowed to drive with “dealer plates” before getting real license plates (with or without help from the people you bought your car from) is about a month in the state of Maryland (where I live) in the U.S. I think that during that time, police are able get your identity from the car dealership that sold the car if you do anything wrong while driving those temporary tags.

It's true, usually dealer plates only last for 30 days, and they are registered with the police. But one time my dad bought a car and we had the dealer plates for over 4 months because of errors at the DMV. It was crazy. In some ways, the car was in limbo, because the dealer tags expired, but we had a paper waiver to put next to them. Still, I think we got pulled over more than once for having expired paper plates, even though there was nothing we could do about it. It was our only car too.
