Around 15th August, we called the days Obon ,お盆, and have been believed that the souls of our ancestor come back. In order to prevent the souls from being at a loss, The paper lantern is putted in front of a entry. In nature, it should be in old calender, but we don't think about a small details. Today, the fire on mountain is lit so that the souls can go to afterlife well. Thought there was a plan that the floodwood in the Tohoku disaster from earthquake was used in the fire to hold a mass, but many claims being afraid of radiation spiked the plan.

The light seems to make the arrive people be at a loss.

'feel lost' looks good. I think the claims were not invalid. It was clearly excess response.

Ohhhh.... OK, I thought you meant you put a candle in a colander - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colander - which would make an interesting light. I thought it would be like a pumpkin on Hallowe'en, which is like the Obon. "Really, the date should be according to the old calendar...." It should also be "....in front of an entry."

I see. Recently, the custom of a paper lantern in this season has faded away in Japan, so the souls seems to get lost easily.
