How to figure out what to get someone for christmas

Christmas is approaching. In Japan, we have the custom of exchanging a gift with my friend, but it isn't easy to choose an appropriate gift for each friend. I often present a music CD as a christmas or birthday gift, because I want to share musical experience with my friends. But I don't know music is best as a gift.
