It's a traditional sacred day for reward the bumper harvest. In China the traditional custom is to eat "腊八粥", it's a kind of conjee made by various rice, bean, nutlet etc. In different area there are different ingredients.
"腊八" is also been regard as the beginning of the Spring Festival, which it the most important festival for Chinese people.
From today, Chinese people will start to prepare for the new lunar year, this year is the year of "tiger" , the next year will be the year of "rabbit", it sound more likability.
On 腊月二十三 （Jan. 26 of the gregorian calendar）, it will be "小年" （sub-festival,the Spring Festival were called "大年"），the day of sacred for kitchen god, and then 腊月三十（Feb.2 of the gregorian calendar）will be "除夕"，it's a day reunion to bring the family together. The next day will be the new year's day on Chinese lunar, also Spring Festival day， we called "正月初一", it and it's following days are the days for people vist relatives and friends, we called "拜年". Untill 正月十五 (Feb.17), which is the "元宵节", the day people enjoyment the colourful lanterns and amuse loong dance or lion dance or lantern riddles, it will be the end of the Chinese new year Spring Festival. It's totally lasted more than a month.

今天是农历腊月初八，也简称“腊八”，它是传统上祭祀丰收的一个节日。在中国传统习俗是吃腊八粥，那是一种用不同的米、豆、果仁等做的粥，不同的地方用不同的配料。
腊八同时也被看成是春节的开始，春节是对中国人来说最重要的一个节日。
从今天起，中国人就开始准备过农历新年了，今年是虎年，明年将是兔年，听起来很可爱的一年。
腊月二十三(公历1月26)，是“小年”，这是祭灶神的日子，然后腊月三十（公历2月2日）就是除夕，这是全家团聚的日子，第二天就是农历新年了，也就是春节日，我们称为正月初一或大年初一，这一天以及接下来的几天是走亲访友的日子，我们叫“拜年”。直到正月十五(公历2月17)，也就是“元宵节”，即人们观赏花灯、舞龙舞狮、猜灯谜等娱乐的日子，这才到中国农历新年春节的结束，总共要持续超过一个月。
