generation of Chinese people, post-80s

As mentioned in my last journal entry, the post-80s were born after the "reform and opening-up" but the country was still experiencing scarcity of goods. In order to ensure fairness, every thing was distributed by the government using "coupons". But the living conditions were rather better than for the post-70s, at least they didn't know what it was like to go hungry.

The most unusual thing about the post-80s compared to the preceding generations was the "family planning policy" which was implemented in the early 80's. although the policy had been in existence since the 70's and even in the 60's, in 80's it became a nation-wide policy that was strictly enforced.

It reported that the one-child policy has succeeded in reducing the population of China by at least 2 hundred million, but now more and more, scholars are concerned with its drawbacks such as the male-female imbalance, ande rapidly graying population, etc.

The other drawback of the one-child policy is its influnce on the upbringing of children. In the 60's and 70's, it's common for a family to have several children, so most children grew up with siblings, with the parent paying equal attention to each child. But in one-child families, the parents will devote all of their energies to their child, often spoiling them in the process.

When the post-80s entered teenage, society/people began realize there was a very serious problem, with no siblings to share things with, and cosseted by parents, these post-80's became unsociable, self-concerned and emotional(/and were not emotionally robust).they didn't know how to get along with their peers. Within the family they became "little emperor", with everyone at their beck and call(/can't been scolded, every desire of them must been satisfied). They were heavily dependent on their parents for everything,(seriously lacking in independence).

Comparing them with the post-70s teenagers, people called the post 80s the "collapsed generation"! They compared them to their peers in Japan and other countries, and concluded that this generation are like greenhouse flowers which can't endure too much rain and wind. They couldn't imagine what the nation's future will be like under this generation. Criticisms appeared in the press, beseeching parents to cease spoiling their children.

With time, the post-80s gradually grow up, they did't "collapsed" as people feared, they passed through their teenage learning many things, and are no longer wayward. Now between the ages of 20 to 30, they are the most energetic generation in the society, they are exerting their ability everywhere.

Maybe they are the morst hardest (hit) generation now enduring the pressure of life in society, they are new the blood of society, without a strong foundation, they have to face severe life pressures immediately, becoming slaves to credit card debts, car loans, housing loans etc. As the only child, when they marry, they have to support two families of 4-8 older adults.

Because the post-80's were spoiled during their childhood, the post-80s and post-70s feel that they are entirely of a different generation, freauently recriminating each other. But now with the gradual emergence of the post-90s, both cant't tolerate the rebellious post-90s,who have become their common target. They now find that they are more similar and more like members of the same generation, particularly having similar childhood and cimple toys. They have both witnessed and experienced society's rapid changes and development over the past two decades.

Sometimes, they are nostalgic of the bygone days of their simple childhood.

Though the post-80s born after the "reform and opening-up", but the country is still scarcity of goods, as my last journal series described, every things needed to be assigned by government using "coupon". But the living conditions were rather better than post-70s, at least they never experienced the thing called went hungry.

The most unusual thing about post-80s that different from the preceding generations was the "family planning policy" which was performed in early 80's. although the policy has put in practice in 70's even in 60's, but in 80's it was become a national formal decision and been strictly executed.

It was said that the one-child policy has at least reduced by 2 hundred millions of population of China, but nowadays it induced more and more drawback that many scholars concerned, like the composition of population unbalance, population aging etc.

The other drawback of one-child policy is to influenced the family upbringing of children. In 60's and 70's families, it's a common thing that a family has several children or even has seven or eight, all children grow up with siblings, the parent pay attention to each child. But when a family only has one child, the parent will devote all of their heart to this child, it's very easy to lead to spoiled.

When the post-80s in teenster, the society realize this is a very serious problem, Cause they have no siblings and been cosseted by parents, they become unsociability, self-concern and emotional.they don't know how to getting along with other peers, In family they are "little emperor", every one should surround with them, can't been scolded, every desire of them must been satisfied. They have strong dependent mind on their parents in every thing, seriously lack of independent life ability.

Compared with post-70s in teenar, people exclaimed this is a collapsed generation! They compared the peers of Japan or other countries, concluded that this generation are really greenhouse flowers, can't endure any rain and wind. Can't imagine the nation's future will burden on this looking generation. Many criticisms appeared in media and the press, appealed the parents no longer spoiled their child any more.

Because of the character of been spoiled, post-70s and post-80s think they are entirely two generations at one time, recriminated each other frequently. But now with the emerge of post-90s, both them cant't tolerance the rebellious of post-90s,who was become the target of both post-70s and post-80s. They all some time nostalgia, for their cannot be recalled, similar short of goods and simple childhood.

People always worried that children in a 1 child household will get spoiled. No one ever worries that children in a multi-child household will be neglected. I have known many people who were raised in a 1 child household (none Chinese that I know of). As adults, I've never known them to have any problems or abnormal character flaws..

There is a Chinese saying "车到山前必有路,船到桥头自然直",It’s means never worry about the future things at present, the solution will appear at that time out of your presupposition.
People often over evaluate a situation. But actually when China's post-80 in teenage, people indeed afraid of them, their behave disappointed everyone, but when they grow up, all the flaws gone. I think the society maybe the best furnace for everyone's grow up.

For me personally it would be very interested to learn about the traditions of education and about releationship whith children in Chinese families.

In the Russian internet has articles with allegations that the Chinese have not accepted praise children for their achievements and general in dealing with children dominated by austerity.

Also would be very interested about role of old Chinese philosophy and religion in modern China.

Also just wanted to know what ordinary Chinese people think about Tibet. On Chinese maps as far as I know - no such country as Tibet.

Oh as I see i have many wishes. If you answer any of them - I'll be very grateful.

谢谢你

Ok, I'll try to write some thing about them in my journal in future.
About Tibet, I want write here not to made another thread

Chinese people think Tibet undoubted the China territory while westerner not conceded it, in my opinion, it's understandable, who wants a large, unified China, it's indeed a threat to any countries.

Tibet as a vassal state of China since Tang Dynasty(about 6th-9th Century), after Yuan Dynasty(12-13th Century) it's become a 内藩(inner vassal state, more closer than a vassal state, even the magistrate were assigned by central government of China emperor), so did in Ming Dynasty(13-16th Century), in Qing Dynasty(16-19th Century), it become an official administrative region of Qing, like other province of China.

In 19th Century China was on decline, many vassal states even the frontier province like Mongolia, Sinkiang(Xinjiang) and Tibet were rebelled for break away the China emperor or government. Because the interference of Russian Empire and Soviet Union, part of Mongolia province independence from China and become the Mongolia country today, the rebellions in SinKiang were quashed, and the British aped Soviet Uninon want Tibet independence, but failed, they only signed a private agreement with the 13th Dalai Lama in 1913 while the central government of China not conceded it, I think this is the root cause of why westerners consider Tibet as a independent country instead of a local province of China. In fact, even Dalai and British had the agreement, they still didn't declare Tibet independence from China, still participate in China congress as a local administrative region.

After new China set up in 1949, the 14th Dalai Lama negotiated a peace treaty with central government of China admited Tibet is a administrative region of China.

Because the 14th Dalai Lama was reluctant to give up the Tibet serf system, they made more and more conflicts with the magistrate of government, in 1959 he rip up the peace agreement and declare Tibet independence, of couse the rebellion was suppressed immediately, the 14th Dalai Lama fled abroad untill today, and advocating Tibet's separation from China every where.

Of cause, the westerner prefer listen to Dalai Lama rather than communist China government, it's understandable also.

This is what I have know about Tibet, I think most Chinese same with me, but why westerner think Tibet is a country, actually I have no notion of it.

I have a question. Do Chinese people usually feel disatisfied with the government's "family planning policy"? I heard that many human rights activists ciriticize it. Acutally, I agree with their idea in some points, 'cause I know having sibling could be a big bliss in life. But, considering world population and related resource problems, it seems quite desirable, at least to foreingers like me.

In the early years of this policy implemented, people always contravened it, because in traditional consciousness "the more sons, the more happiness", and there also have the value "sons more importance than daughters", because sons can inherit the family's surname. I think it's similar in Korea traditional view. When the "one child policy" enforced, the family born girl always want get at least one son, so the family planning policy often been break.

Nowadays people usually approval the policy and supporte it, because everyone experienced what the concept of the population. More important, with many welfare policies of socialism been abrogated, to bring up a child is a very hardship work now, to avoid the living standard falling, people usually birth one child on their own initiative.

Thank you for your explanation.
Recent Korea has been experiencing the opposite situation of China's. Korea's government is encouraging people to have more babies, providing many benifits to the third child. But many families in the city wouldn't have more than two because of financial problems.

It's a common phenomena in developed countries like Korea, Japan and many Europe countries, and the DINKs also appeared in Beijing, Shanghai and other big cities in China, people's conceptions are differ from past time. Recently the family planning policy were discussed in media again, focus on coming aging society soon people must faced, I think the policy will looser and looser gradually. Actualy in many province it's already discussing in many government development policy meetings

I had no idea about recent changes in China's family plan. Thanks for the information.

In my opinion, Korea is not yet a developed country. She has many problems from both developed countries and developing ones. As to DINKs, they are still very rare in Korea.
Sep 06th 2011 21:48 bigfaintfish
For Chinese people we think Korea surely a developed country, many young people charmed with Korea drama, movie and music stars, and admire Korea industry and economy. I think every country has the unique problems.
In China, DINKs also rare, I haven't see any of them, but some organization said in big cities there are more than 10% families DINKs, I doubt about it.
