A letter to my friend

Hello

Thanks for your email.

I asked some foreigners living or being interested in Japan a question about Japanese news which was written in English.
I attached a few website address.

I watched a program on traveling on TV last night. It was a content that someone travelled to getting on the Ghan from Darwin to Alice Springs. If I make a trip to other countries, I'd like to ride on a local train.
When I stayed in Brisbane, I didn't have a chance to take a train.(When I only went to the movie world and an outlet mall, I took a train with my friends.)
Their destination is, of course, Uluru. It was absolutely brilliant rock!!
After climbing in the early morning, they watched sunrise from top of the rock. This is a really popular tour among Japanese.

I heard about New Year's celebration in Australia from my English teacher. Is it true that everyone in your country drinks alcohole too much, watches magnificent fireworks together? In Japan, it's usual to watch a special music show called "Kouhaku utagassen" on TV with family.
It's traditional to visit a shrine or temple to pray good luck.

Anyway,please take care of yourself

Regards,

That trip they did on that show sounds really good.
Even though I live in Australia I still haven't been many places.
I've only been to Adelaide, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

Adelaide was really quiet and boring.
Sydney was not as good as Melbourne, haha
Gold Coast was really fun for a trip but I wouldn't live there.

Me too! Even though I live in Japan, I haven't been lots of places in Japan.
I haven't watched Mt. Fuji in my life(I have watched it on TV.)
Have you been to Cairns before?
Cairns was a really small town but there were many beautiful seas!
I swam at the Green island with my friend.

Nah, I haven't been to Cairns. What is there to do?
A lot of Japanese people on this site you have been to Australia have been to Cairns. Why there?

A lot of media introduce about Cairns on TV or magazine. It's warm all year around.
Then,I guess Aussie are really friendly and Cairns is the nearest city in Australia from Japan so we go there. Maybe...
Jan 24th 2009 15:29 カイリ・ダレル

Yeah, that could be it.
I just haven't really heard much about Cairns so I wasn't sure why so many people go there.
Jan 24th 2009 16:15 Brisbanelovecity

Cairns is not a tour place for Australian, isn't it?
Recently a lot of foreiners go to the Tsukiji-ichiba(=a famous and the biggest fish market in Tokyo)to watch cooking fish. I think this is an unusual trip.
If they go there, they have to wake up early... I can't !
Jan 24th 2009 19:18 カイリ・ダレル

I don't think it is. People in Australia seem to go to the Gold Coast because of the theme parks.
When I go to Japan I don't think I will go to the fish market to watch people cook. I wouldn't really want to get up early just to see people cook fish either. haha
Jan 24th 2009 22:56 oddddeok

I think people go to Cairns for the rainforests and the Sky Train thing (I'm not sure what it is). I don't understand what's so interesting about the city of Cairns either - it seems like a tourist trap! It's better as a starting point to go to the reef or the islands.

My sister recently took a weekend trip to Cairns - she was bored silly!

I've only been to the airport on the way to Japan. And, I really hate the Gold Coast. It's only an hour from my house (I live in Brisbane) but it's so fake and tacky and ridiculously expensive. But there was a kebab shop there that sold great ful medames and other Egyptian foods.

I'd like to see Uluru, but I don't know if I'd climb it. I heard it's disrespectful to local Aborigines, who would only climb the rock as part of religious rites.
Jan 24th 2009 23:42 カイリ・ダレル

Yeah, Gold Coast is extremely expensive, the theme parks are good for maybe a day each and the beaches are no better than the rest of the country.

I don't really have any plans to go to Cairns, but I might just for the hell of it. haha
Uluru would be good, and I have also heard that it is disrespectful to climb it. But... I think if I was there I would want to climb it anyway.

In Sydney I had a really boring time. I went into that sky tower thing which wasn't very impressive. No better than the tallest building in any other city. But I was there New Years Eve near the bridge and that was pretty cool. I was only 12 so the fireworks still amazed me, haha.

I saw an advert for Brisbane on TV and it didn't make it look very fun, it showed an empty park then had a caption "Brisbane... a sleepy little town". I'm sure it can't be as bad as that advert made it look.
Jan 25th 2009 02:49 oddddeok

HAHAHA! That's hilarious! Is Brisbane really that boring? Well, yes. But you only realise it when you go somewhere else. I get rather peeved about it when I come back from overseas and I start to miss the conveniences, like 24 hour shopping or something. Service! That would be nice.

I was born in Sydney but I've only been back twice in 31 years. Last time I went, i thought it was fun, but I wouldn't want to stay longer than a week. It's too busy and crowded. But I loved their Chinatown - it's as big as Brisbane's entire CBD! So at least that was good.

Anyway, Brisbane's sleepy reputation is well-earned, I reckon! However, we are the nation's fireworks capital, that's true. I think we would set off fireworks at the opening of a car door!
Jan 25th 2009 09:43 カイリ・ダレル

haha, When I went to Sydney I suppose I didn't really get to go and do much. I had to go stay with my mum's boyfriends family for a couple of weeks. I guess I dislike Sydney just because I am from Melbourne, haha.

Our Chinatown is just one long lane that stretches the length of the city. Not very big. We also have a sort of Japan town place. The second floor in one of the supermarkets is all Japanese.

At schoolies recently, my mate was hit in the eye with a firework, (drunk teens aren't good at aiming, haha). He was fine, just has a little scar on his eyelid but now he hates fireworks. I still like them, but I sort of get sick of fireworks getting canceled because of the heat.
Jan 25th 2009 09:57 oddddeok

I have a friend whose shirt was set on fire by fireworks at Chinese New Year one year. They were all a bit tipsy and he's telling people, "Give me your beer, I'm on fire!" and they're all going, "Yeah, I'm on fire, too, mate", until they realised he really was on fire and tipped their beers over him. He is the sort of person given to make extravagant statements like that, though, so it's no wonder nobody believed him at first.

Speaking of being on fire (as you do). I was on fire once, too! I had my hair burnt off up to my ears when I was a little girl at Carols by Candlelight at my primary school. I was in Grade One at the time.

Then one day, in like 1996 or something, this guy walks up to me at uni and says, "Hey, aren't you that girl whose hair was on fire at Carols by Candlelight?" I was speechless. Not only that someone recognised me from Grade One, but I hadn't even gone to school with the fella. It was his sister who had!

That's one's truly from Bizarro-zarro Land.

So how did this topic get to "situations where people I know are on fire"? That's just a day in the life of oddddeok, man...

When you write diary, letter or something, do you skip latterof words?

Anyway, thanks to your conversation, my reading writing and speaking skills will be improve and I understood well about Australia.
Jan 25th 2009 12:02 oddddeok

I WAS speaking very casually, especially in that last post! The way I was writing was very close to my real casual speech patterns. We do sometimes skip words, but only because we know from the context what we are refering to.

You are totally right!

Advert/ad = advertisement. We almost never say advertisement because it's too long. Personally, I usually say 'ad'.
Uni = university. Like 'ad', university is simply too long!

If you need to know the meanings of any words (I imagine Bizarro-zarro Land isn't in your dictionary!), just ask!

: P
Jan 25th 2009 12:21 カイリ・ダレル

Yeah, I usually say "ad" as well. And same with "Uni". There are quite a few words that are shortened or a play on other words. eg: "Bizarre -> Bizarro-zarro land" is just one of many.
And sometimes words that are very obvious are left out.
