제 한국인 학생들은 항상 영어로 "Go to hospital"와 "Go to the doctor"를 자주 혼동한다.
My Korean students are always confused between "Go to hospital" and "Go to the doctor".
병원이 쉬운 단어 인 것 같아지요?
"Hospital" seems like such an easy word, doesn't it?
그런데, 병원은 영어로 특별한사용 있는데요.
However, the word "hospital" has a special usage in English.
혹시 사고가 발생할지 끔찍한 손해를 입을지 구급 병원에 간다.
If you are in an car crash or get terribly injured, you go to an "emergency" hospital.
감기가 걸랄지 사소한 문제 있을지 병원에 간다.
If you have the flu or a minor problem, you go to the doctor.
요컨대 "hospital"은구급의 의미가 있고 "go to the doctor"은 긴급하지 않은 문제가 있어요.
To sum up, "hospital" is for emergencies and "go to the doctor" is for non-urgent matters.

How about between "Go to a clinic" and "Go to the doctor"? I think they are the same.

병원이 쉬운 단어인 것 같지요(or 같죠)?
그런데, 병원은 영어로 특별한 용도로 사용합니다 혹은 특별한 뜻으로 사용합니다.
만약 사고가 발생할 때나 손해를 입을 때 구급 병원에 갑니다. (혹시 has the same usage with "in case" of English.)
감기가 걸리거나 사소한 문제 있을 때에(도) 병원에 간다.
요컨대 "hospital"은 구급의 의미가 있고 "go to the doctor"은 긴급하지 않은 문제가 있어요('"go to the doctor"는 급하지 않을 때 쓰입니다' is better, I think).
teachers usually teach them "go to the hospital."
That's why your students are confused.

그런데하지만, 병원이란 단어는은 영어로에선 특별[CROSS OUT]한하게 사용 되고있는데요.
혹시 교통사고가 발생할지 또는 끔찍심각한 손해상처를 입을지 구급 병원에 간다었을 때 응급실에 갑니다.
감기가 걸랄지 라던지 사소한심각하지 않은 문제(병)이 있을지땐 병원에 간갑니다.
요컨대 "hospital"은구급의 의미가 있고 "go to the doctor"은 긴급하지 않은 문제의미가 있어요.

외국은 pesonal doctor 가 있지 않나요?
한국은 그렇지 않고 가까운 병원을 찾아가기 때문에 go to the doctor 라는 표현이 생소하게 느껴지는 것 같아요 ^^

I'm pretty sure Korea has the same hospital system as other countries. When I lived in Korea, I got a bad flu and I went to the see a GP in my local neighbourhood. HIs office was definately in a Medical Centre, not a hospital!
