最近、ウォーカーアートセンターでのインターンシップを終えたところです。私はデザイン部門で働きました。展示会、公演、映画上映用のプリント素材を作りました。私は様々な部門のスタッフとの協力しました、そしてデザイナーや編集スタッフと一緒に働きました。

私は三年間日本語を勉強しており、マカレスター大学で日本語の授業を受けました。MCADでの私の卒業論文のテーマは多言語コミュニケーションでした。特に、日本語と英語の関係に焦点を当てました。私はまた、日本のグラフィックデザイン専用にブログを作成しました。

私はエディトリアルデザインの分野での更なる専門的な経験を得る機会をいただけることを願っています。将来的には私は雑誌や本をデザインをしたいですし、この機会によって、雑誌の製作における工程や業務に関して、私の理解はより深まることになるでしょう。そして、今回私は雑誌の出版の一連の流れを習得できる機会だとも考えております。

Dear Naoko Nishiwaki and the Monocle Tokyo Bureau,

Please accept this letter as an application for the Tokyo Monocle internship position. I am a recent graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a BFA in Graphic Design. I studied graphic design in Japan a year ago and developed a functional knowledge of the Japanese language. Additionally, I have acquired an intimate understanding of the design process, in terms of project management, tracking outcomes, and print and web production.

While studying in Osaka, all my classes were conducted in Japanese, allowing me to refine my communication skills and giving me an understanding of the kind of language used in a creative environment. I also lived with a host family, fully submersing me in the life, culture, and language of Japan.

I recently completed an internship at the internationally distinguished contemporary art museum, the Walker Art Center, working in their design department to produce print materials for exhibitions, performances, and film screenings. There I collaborated with staff from various departments and worked closely with other designers and the editorial staff.

I’ve been actively studying Japanese for three years, and took an introductory course at Macalester College, to prepare for studying abroad. Additionally, my senior thesis at MCAD was an investigation of interlanguage communication, focusing on the relationship between the Japanese and English languages. Research has always been a primary element of my creative process and recently, it has driven the content of my personal work. I am also actively collecting, researching, and writing for a blog I created, called Gurafiku, dedicated to Japanese graphic design.

With this opportunity I hope to gain further professional experience in the field of editorial design. In the future I aspire to design magazines and books and this opportunity would give me a better understanding of the processes and tasks involved in the operations of a magazine.
