Today, I will compare the differences between Japan and Finland. First, I will talk about the education system. Next is the language identity and then the communication styles. What kind of differences there are?
First, Finland’s education system sets high standard. It is No.1 in the world. Their compulsory education is from when they are 7 years old to 16 years old and all schools are public schools. Everything is free including the textbooks, lunch even pencils. Finland is a small country so they are putting a great deal of effort into foreign languages. Their English education starts from 3rd grade and when Japanese start learning English, Finnish start learning Swedish so they can speak at least 3 languages. In the last year of school, if students feel they need to study more they can go to school for one more year. As you can see, the education system is supported well and there is a big difference between Japan and Finland.
Second, I will talk about the language identity. Finland was colonized by Sweden and Russian for a long time ago. Now, they are using 93.4% of Finnish and 5.9 % of Swedish and these two languages are the national languages. Swedish has influence. It is used in business, politics and so on. It is different to Japan because Japan’s national language is only one. On the other hand, Russian is not taught as much as Swedish because Russian was considered as a savage language. However the number of people who speak Russian is increasing in these days. Finnish are very patriotic so their language identity is strong.
Finally, I will talk about the communication styles. Finnish are very shy like Japanese and they are ingenious people. They have differences in their communication styles, the kind of verbal and non-verbal communication. However there are some communication styles like Japanese ones. They make eye contacts and bow for respect like Japanese do. However, once you get to know them, they will open their mind. It seems like the way to communicate with people is similar to Japan.

I haven't traveled yet but I hosted 3 people. One is from California and the others from Denmark. The guy from California is traveling Japan by hitchhiking. It was very surprising to me and I was inspired. I guess I am going to travel to the us this summer :))
