Does the accent matter?

I speak something like a Standard British accent, it has been easy to learn for me.
When I try to imitate an American accent, I don't suceed, I sound strange and can't speak clearly.

Here in Chile the most of the tourists, businessmen, etc come from the USA, so that's why I'm asking if the accent matters.

Very nice writing! And I don't think accent matters - if your speech is clear and easy to understand, it doesn't matter what your accent is. Don't worry about trying to imitate an American accent!

I agree with ティッフ, the important thing is to pronounce clearly. People from all English speaking countries understand each other perfectly.

I'm sorry to interrupt you all and for my poor English.

Actually, I have been mainly initiating American accent until now, but I was worried about how I should improve my pronunciation from now.
However, thanks to this journal and your comments, I was able to find the answer!

Agreed with Ray. As long as you actually try to speak clearly you'll probably be understood.
