Relatives often bring the ashes of their loved ones and scatter them in the Ganges in the belief that this will benefit the departed soul. Hindu believe that if they take bath in Ganga then they can get rid of transmigration.

Really? Isn't transmigration fundamental to Hinduism? Maybe bathing in the Ganges is trying to ensure they return as humans, rather than animals or plants?
As I understand it, a "ghat" is a stairway leading into water, like a river.
One thing for sure: India is a very colorful country. I really enjoy reading your posts and learning about India.

You may be interested in knowing that there are some in Western cultures who consider "hell on Earth" as reincarnation; that is, the pious go to heaven, the impious are reincarnated to live on Earth again!
