I can't understand this sentence at all.
It is a excerpt of the listening section of Toefl pre-test.
"Uh, other things that glaciers can do is, uh, as they retreat, instead of depositing some till, uh, scraped up soil, in the area, they might leave a big ice block and it breaks off and as the ice block melts it leaves a dpression which can become a lake."
Please tell me!!
It's Greek to me. XO

when it says "...other things that glaciers can do is...", we know
that this paragraph is talking about what glaciers do.
Look at this sentence-->" instead of depositing some till, uh, scraped up soil, in the area,...". when the author says "instead of depositing till", he means that the glacier is going to do something else. When he says, "uh, scraped up soil," in that sentence, he's explaining what till is since it's not a common word.
Here's another way of saying that sentence:"The glacier doesn't deposit till in the area. Till by the way, is scraped up soil. Instead, the glacier..."
In the rest of the paragraph, the author is talking about how the glacier breaks off a piece. This piece then melts and forms a big hole which might become a lake later.
I hope you understand all this information. If you don't understand, I'll be happy to try and explain in 日本語! :)
Great, I didn't notice that 'scraped up soil' meant 'till' at all.
thanks for your advice^^
I don't understand this sentence at all. (dont works better in this sentence since once the excerpt is explained you will understand/as opposed to cant where you wont be able to ever)
It is a excerpt of the listening section of the Toefl Pre-test. (say the Toefl Pre-test since it is a specific pre-test)(I'm actually unsure if you should capitalize pre-test, I did, but that might be wrong... its better to capitalize and it be unnecessary than not to when you should)
"Some things that a glacier might do when it retreat is instead of depositing till(scraped up soil) in the area, they might leave a big ice block. The ice block breaks off the glacier and as it melts it leaves a depression which can become a lake."
The answer to the first question is: lakes formed when pieces of glaciers melt.
(Kettles are depressions{large indents in the land} left behind after partially-buried ice blocks melt. Many are filled with water, and are then called "kettle lakes".)
The answer to the second question is: They reduced the biodiversity of the Great Lakes.
Refer to(So I just wanted to tell you a little bit more about glaciers and the positive things that we get from climate change, like the ecosystems that develop in these kettle lakes.) Because the glaciers were there the water was too cold for many things to survive, because of climate change and the ice melting the water warms allowing many more things to live there.
Besides the answers! hehe
yes, so difficult for me...
I have a question about the second questioin. I think there was no mentions that the biodiversity of Great Lakes was reduced, so do we have to infer that answer?
I got this answer by reading the passage: So I just wanted to tell you a little bit more about glaciers and the positive things that we get from climate change, like the ecosystems that develop in these kettle lakes.
**The ecosystem is referring to the plant and animal life or the area.**
That exactly makes sure! I simply thought that the ice melting caused the Grate Lakes deeper.
Ok, thank you very much!
If you have a problem with Japanese, ask me too. I'll help you as much as possible.
I think my sentence is much easier than that one for you to understand.
yes, but too easy...(laugh)
I wanted know the details, sorry.
but thanks anyway Toshiaki^^
