September 12 I had my first course of 日本語. Now I attend this course for 90 minutes every week. I only know a few words and am able to speak very few sentences. However, I can already translate Hiragana to Romaji and vice versa. After practicing writing Hiragana, I will start learning Katakana. Is it okay if I would introduce myself like this:

はじめまして
わたしは まれえん です
おなまえは なん です か

What I want to say is:

Nice to meet you.
I am Marleen.
What's your name?
Oct 05th 2011 20:45 Fumi

Good job.
Probably, Japanese people say your name まれーん .
Oct 05th 2011 21:10 Mitsie
ありがとう! Is まれーん pronounced the same? Mareen would probably be closest to Marleen.
Oct 05th 2011 21:17 Mitsie
My nickname is Mitsie, which in Dutch sounds like Mitsi. How would that be pronounced in Japanese?
Oct 05th 2011 20:46 Ratty

はじめまして。
ひらがな を おぼえる ために なんしゅうかん ひつようでしたか。

Hi, nice to meet you too.
How many weeks were required to study Hiragana?
Oct 05th 2011 21:03 Mitsie
It was not required. So most people in the course only learn how to speak Japanese. I am learning the reading and writing by myself and then the teacher gives me a quick test every week to evaluate how I'm doing with the Hiragana.
Oct 05th 2011 21:13 Mitsie
Also thanks for writing in both Hiragana and English! That's great!
Oct 05th 2011 21:23 Ratty
すごい。じぶん だけで よみ、かき を おぼえただなんて!
すぐに かたかな(カタカナ) も かんじ(漢字) も つかえるように なれそう ですね。

You are learning read / write Hiragana your self! Great!!
You will master Katakana and Kanji soon...
Oct 05th 2011 21:28 Mitsie
I don't worry about mastering カタカナ. But 漢字... seems like neverending learning and very difficult.
Oct 05th 2011 21:44 Ratty
きらくに。せんり の みち も いっぽから。と いいますよ。

Take it easy. As the saying goes, 'Every journey begins with a single step'. You are already do your first step.

Als dat lukt, zou dat geweldig zijn! Er zijn hier in Nederland meerdere prachtige musea en verschillende mooie steden.
Ik hoop genoeg geld te kunnen sparen om in juli of augustus naar Japan te kunnen gaan.

That would be nice :) ありがとう Where in Japan are you from?
I live in Utrecht and I work in Amsterdam, which both are nice older cities in the Netherlands. I have also lived in 's-Hertogenbosch (a.k.a. Den Bosch) and near Tilburg. I travel a lot through almost the whole country every month to visit family and friends. It helps that it's such a small country ^_^

  • わたしは まれえん です
  • わたしは まれえん です ★Dit is ook goed. Actually, there is no sound like Dutch 'r' in Japanese. So まれーん(マレーン) may be the closest sound to Marleen. (I think Dutch 'ee' is not a diphthong but a long vowel, so まれーん is better than まれえん, which sounds like a diphthong.) If you want to include an 'r'-like consonant, まるれーん(マルレーン) would be good, too.

Hoi Mitsie,
Congrats on your first Japanese entry!
I think 'Mitsie' would be みっしー(ミッシー) or みっすぃー(ミッスィー) in Japanese. (Type 'suli' for 'すぃ')

By the way, July and August are the hottest months in Japan. I think Spring or Autumn is the best season to visit Japan. :-)

To learn Kanji, I think the information on this entry is helpful.
