「The straw that broke the camel's back」は英語の表現です。日本語で「ラクダの背中を壊れた藁」です。

理解することができますか。
説明しましょう！

この表現はアラビア語から来ました。昔、ラクダは藁をせおっていたそうです。この表現には、このラクダがたくさんたくさん藁をせおっています。もう荷が重すぎます。限界点に来ました。もう一つ藁、それが壊れています。この場合,　ラクダが歩くことができません。動くことができません。

意味は、することができないかに成りました。

バリエーションは「らくだの背中を壊した最後の羽」と「猿の背中を壊したメロン」と「ロバの背中を壊した藁」です。

英語で「this is the last straw」と聞こえることがあります。日本語で「これは最後の藁です」と言います。「the last straw」は人気の表現です。普通、人が忍耐がない時言います。

偽の例を書きましょう。

友達は仕事を止めたいです。仕事は難しくて大嫌いです。会社で新しい部長が来ました。部長は酷くて２０以上若くいです。この新しい部長は最後の藁です。友達はこの仕事を止めます。

ほかの例。
パーティーで私のガールフレンドは他の男とキスした、それは最後の藁でした。関係が終わりました。

'The straw that broke the camel's back' is an English expression. In Japanese you would say, 'rakuda no senakao kowareta wara'. Can you understand this? I'll explain! This expression comes from an Arabic proverb. Long ago, camels usually carried around a lot of hay. In this expression, there is a camel that is carrying lots and lots of hay. He is carrying too much. So much in fact he is at his breaking point. One more single piece of straw and he will fall down. In this case he can't walk or move. The meaning is something like, 'the last thing that makes the situation impossible.'

Here are a couple of less common variations, 'The last feather that broke the camel's back', 'the melon that broke the monkey's back', 'the straw that broke the donkey's back'. In English you might hear, 'this is the last straw'. In Japanese that would be something like, 'korewa saigo no wara desu'. 'The last straw' is also a common expression. Usually this is said when someone has no patience left.

There are some made up examples.
My friend wants to quit his job. He doesn't like the work and it is difficult. At the office there is a new boss. That boss is 20 years younger and very mean. That boss is the last straw and my friend quits.
Here is another example. At a party, my girlfriend was kissing another guy. That's the last straw. The relationship is over.

アメリカと日本の雪だるまはちょっと違います。アメリカのは３つ部分があります。日本のは２つがあります。７歳の姪と私が絵を描きました。アメリカで鼻は人参が多くです。伝統的に、ボタンと目は炭で作りました。今、普通は石で作ります。トップハットが持っている場合、雪だるまはかぶっています。

アメリカで有名な雪だるまの歌があります。子供たちは全部知っています。「フロスティー」と申します。子供はフロスティーの話も知っています。ここで聞こえます。聞いたことがありますか？

Japanese and American snowmen are different. American snowmen are made from three snowballs. Japanese only have two. My 7 year old niece and I drew a picture of this. In America, we usually use a carrot for the nose and traditionally coal for the eyes and buttons. Nowadays we use rocks in place of coal. If someone has a top hat, they will use put it on a snowman. There is a famous　song about a snowman named Frosty. Every kid in America knows his story too. You can hear the song here.　Have you ever heard of him?

いつも料理することが好きと言ったでも実は食べることがもっと好きです。


先日、姪と一緒にパンプキンのブレッドを作りました。アメリカと日本の料理が違うから料理することはたぶんいい日記だと思います。夫はピーナツバターの味のクッキーキーが好きので今日は作りました。リーシズピーシズはM＆Mｓのようなお菓子ですが中にピーナツバターがあります。


アメリカのレシピでは、変な測定法を使用しています。たとえば、カップ(250cc)やテーブルスプーン(15cc)やティースプーン(5cc)です。

材料

3 1/2　カップ。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。麦粉
¾ ティースプーン。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。塩
3/4 ティースプーン。。。重曹・ベーキングソーダ
1 カップ。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。茶色砂糖
3/4 カップ。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。砂糖
1 カップ。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。バター
2 Lサイズ。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。たまご
1 テーブルスプーン。。。。。。。。。。。。。。バニラ
2 カップ。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。リーシズピーシズ

作り方：

１．）オーブンを３５０F（176Ｃ)に温める。Lサイズボウルには麦粉と塩と重曹（ベーキングソーダ”）を一緒に混ぜる。

２．）他のLサイズボウルには茶色砂糖と砂糖を混ぜる。バターに混ぜる。卵とバニラに混ぜる。

３．）麦粉の混合物に混ぜる。リーシズピーシズに混ぜる。

４．）クッキーシートの上にスプーンー杯で置く。８－１０分焼く。


I always tell people that I love to cook but secretly I just love to eat.

The other day I made pumpkin bread with my niece. Cooking food stories might make good journal entries being as American food is different than Japanese food. My husband loves peanut butter flavored cookies so I made some today. Reece’s Pieces are peanut butter filled chocolates like M&Ms.

American recipes use strange measurements. They call for cups (250cc), tablespoons (15cc), and teaspoons (5cc).


Ingredients:
-3 1/2 cups flour
-3/4 teaspoon salt
-3/4 teaspoon baking soda
-1 cup packed brown sugar
-3/4 cup granulated sugar
-1 cup butter
-2 large eggs
-1 tablespoon vanilla extract
-2 cups Reese's Pieces




Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350F. Mix together flour, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl.

2. In a different large mixing bowl, mix brown and white sugars. Add butter. Add eggs and vanilla.

3. Add flour mixture. Stir in 2 cups of Reece’s.

4. Drop dough by the spoonful on cookie sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes.

ダンキンドーナツはニューイングランドに一番人気の喫茶店です。日本に行った時、ダンキンのコーヒーを見つけません。ミスタードーナツは同じじゃありません。ダンキンはコーヒーやドーナツや朝ごはんのサンドイッチやマフィンを売っています。マンチキンと言う小さいドーナツも売っています。季節の商品を売っています。今、秋ですからリンゴとパンプキンのドーナツがあります。アップルサイダーも売っています。甘くて深いアップルジュースの味がします。美味しいです。ダンキンはスターバックスより安いです。

Dunkin Donuts is the most popular coffee chain here in New England. When I went to Japan, I was sad to not have my Dunkin. They sell coffee, donuts, breakfast sandwiches and muffins. They also have small donuts called ‘munchins.’ They also have tasty seasonal items. In New England during fall you get pumpkin and apple donuts. They also have apple cider. It tastes like sweet thick apple juice. It is very tasty. Dunkin Donuts is cheaper than Starbucks.

For my birthday, my family went to Percy’s Place. Percy’s place is an American breakfast food restaurant chain in Massachusetts. This is a popular place for families on the weekends. Photos are attached. Here is their site. The menu is huge and you can order breakfast all day.

I had French toast. The French toast had whipped cream, strawberries, and blueberries on top. Biscuits and gravy is a southern breakfast food. My husband ate that. American food can make you fat. Please be careful. American breakfast food is different in the north and the south. For example, in the north we have maple trees so it is common to eat pancakes with maple syrup.

In this free time I’ve been babysitting my nieces. They are really sweet cute kids. They are 3 and 7. The 3 year old really likes the Studio Ghibli movie Ponyo. I was surprised. She watched it twice in a row. It was all in English. The songs where even in English.

When I was in Japan I saw the Studio Ghibli museum. My favorite Miyazaki movie is 'Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi.' We call it 'Spirited Away' in America. My favorite character is Kaonashi (Noface in English).

I don't know the history of Kaonashi. Is it a Japanese monster? Do you know?

明日は私の誕生日で３０歳になります。
今年の夏は忙しかったです。日記を書く時間がありません。

私の結婚式は７月２日２０１１年でした。
アメリカで結婚式は大切でたくさんお金を掛かります。伝統的な結婚式は両親が払ったけど最近変わりました。私たちの家族は金持ちないから私と夫が全部結婚式を払いました。それから、私の結婚式はとても安かったです。家族はお金をくれなかったのに手伝いました。たとえば、お母さんはウェディングドレスの手直をしたり、兄さんの奥さんはウェヂングのカップケーキを作ったり、夫のお母さんの家で結婚のパーティーをしたりしました。結婚式はマセチュ－セッツのプリマスの港でしました。天気は晴れた空でした。１００人は来ました。家族と友達は遠いから来ました。カリフォニアやフロリダです。すばらしかったでした。友達はウェヂングのトッパー作りました。　写真が付けました。

次の日、新紺旅行のために日本へ行きました。たくさん日本の所を見たことがありました。一番の好きな所は京都の伏見稲荷大社です。鳥居はすごいです。アメリカで博物館にだけ昔のことが見られることがあります。全部旅行は５週間しました。沖縄も行って大学校の友達を会いました。DENNY’Sや７－ELEVENがあるのでびっくりしました。アメリカの店は違います。アメリカにあるだけと思いました。

今、アメリカへ帰りました。アメリカでミルクチィとヤクルトが買えません。

Yesterday was my ｂirthday and I turned 30.
This summer was very busy. I didn't have any time to write journal　entries.

I got married on July 2nd 2011. In America weddings are important and cost a lot of money. Traditionally parents pay for wedding, but recently that has changed. Our families don't have much money. My husband and I paid for our entire wedding. Because of this, it was cheap. Even though our families didn't give us any money they still helped. For example my mother fitted my wedding dress, my brother's wife made the wedding cupcakes and we had the after party at my husband's mother's house. The wedding was by the harbor in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The weather was perfect. 100 people came. Family and friends came from far away like California and Florida. It was great. My friend made wedding toppers. A photo is attached.

The next day, we left for Japan for the honeymoon. We visited many places in Japan. My favorite place was the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto. Torii gates are awesome. In America the only place to see old things is in a museum. The entire trip was 5 weeks in total. We even visited Okinawa and saw my old college friend. I was surprised to see Denny's and 7-Eleven. They are different from the American stores. I thought they were only in America.

Now I'm back in America. In America you can't get milk tea or Yakult drinking yogurt.

最近、私は家で仕事をしています。昼休みの時に外へ走るのが好きです。今日は、走る中４０セントとダイを見つけました。宝探しのようでした。

ウェヂングドレスを探し始めました。アメリカの伝統文化のウェヂングドレスはいつも白いです。ひそかに緑の探しています。ウェヂングドレスのショップの中にたくさん白いものがあります。とても変なところです。

Recently I've been working from home. Over my lunch break I like to go running. Today, while running I found 40 cents and a die. It was like treasure hunting.

I've begun to look for a wedding dress. Wedding dresses are traditionally white in American culture. Secretly, I'm searching for a green dress. Shops that sell wedding dresses are very white inside. It is very strange.

先ごろ新しいHARRY POTTERの映画が映画館に来ました。
まだ見たことがないけどHARRY POTTERのファンです。

これから経験の事を覚えました。大学を行った時に伯母さんは家族をフロリダの家へ一週間泊まって請いました。私はマサチューセッツに住んでいて海水が冷たいですからフロリダへ行ける休みがとても優しいです。
あの時の千春と言うルームメートも来ました。
フロリダの休みの中に新しいHARRY POTTERの本を本屋に初めて売りました。千春もファンです。
私と千春がフロリダの本屋で先に頼んで買って決めました。
零時で本を取って朝まで読んでいました。
千春の英語を読む腕前はとても上手です。

たまに読む中千春が止まって私に質問を聞きました。
たとえば、「dementorは同言う意味ですか？辞書の中に見つけませんでした。。。」。早くアメリカの英語で説明した見ました。千春が説明を分かったと思います。

HARRY POTTERの世界の虚構の言葉は英語の母後話者に分かりやすいです。でも英語を習う人にこれは難しいです。

千春がHARRY POTTERの本を読んだ腕前はすごいと思っています。
私のあとですぐ読んだ終りました。

The new Harry Potter movie just came out. I haven’t gone to see it yet, but I am a fan.

This movie release reminds me of this memory I have. When I was in college, my aunt invited my family down to her house in Florida for a week. I live in Massachusetts and the ocean up here is frigid, so being able to go to Florida on a trip is really nice!
My roommate at the time (her name was Chiharu) also came.

As it turns out the week we were in Florida, the newest Harry Potter book at the time was being released. Chiharu is also a Harry Potter fan. We both preordered the book at a book store down there.
We picked up our books at midnight and both read through until morning. Chiharu’s English reading skills are really great.
Occasionally, she would stop reading to ask me a question.
For example she would ask, ‘What does ’Dementor’ mean? I can’t find it in my dictionary.’

In my fast American accented English I tried to explain. I think she understood.

Made up words for the fictional Harry Potter world are easy for a native speaker to understand. But difficult for those learning the language.

I still think Chiharu’s ability to read the Harry Potter books is amazing. She finished reading the book soon after me.

往年、悪事が戦うビーガンのバンパイアに成ったの夢を見ました。
一つだけ部分をくっきりと覚えました。
夢の中に２つの友達がレストランで昼ご飯を食べて合えていました。　
友達が「バンパイアに成ったからにはどう白日に居られるできまか？何を注文しましたか？」と聞きました。
それからウエートレスが飯を持ってきました。
サラダと大きくって赤いトマトを貰いました。
トマトだけ取った牙は噛り付いたしょう液を干しました。
出来た時にトマトはレーズンと同じな乾燥の見た目がありました。
正しく、私のベジタリアンのパワーから白日に居られてできました。
夢は面白いことですね。

One time, I had a dream that I was a crime-fighting vegan vampire.
I only remember one part clearly.
In my dream I was meeting up with two old friends for lunch at a diner.
My friends asked me, “Since becoming a vampire how is it that you can be in the daylight? What did you order?”
Then the waitress came with our meals.
I received a big salad with a big red tomato.
I picked up just the tomato, sunk in my fangs and sucked up all the juices.
When I was done, it had the dehydrated appearance of a raisin.
Apparently, my vegetarian powers enabled me to stay out in the daylight.
Dreams are interesting, aren‘t they?

アパートには三つ問題があります。

一番問題：ここに食器洗い機がありません。
(じゃ。。。食器洗い機があった言える。。。私。。）
二番問題：ここに洗濯機がありません。
（週末の間、洗濯屋が開くの時間は私の暇を治めます。）
三番問題：ここにシャワーがありません。
（だけ浴槽があります。）

アティックアパートに住んでいるので私の壁はやねのひさしです。
このためにいくつか壁が歪んでいます。お手洗いは随分かかわりました。ここにシャワーのスパースがありません。このひさしの下小さいスペースには私の浴槽があります。ここに立たないいるから恐るべきなことです。

一年半、問題と一緒に住んでいました。家族の家へ帰った何時も母は「地下室にクリーンのタオルがあって洗濯機が開きます。」と言います。母は私が汚い洗濯と来るを知っています。

シャワーと食器洗い機と洗濯機があった所は夢見ます。

でもぞじるしの電気シャーポットと電気釜を持っています。どちらもとても便利です。

アメリカの電気釜より日本のはちょういいだと思います。
昨年、この辺にぞじるしの産品を見つけました。
SUPER88と言う中国のチェーン店が売っています。

The problems with my apartment

My apartment has three main problems.
1) There isn’t a dishwasher. (Well, one could say we have a dishwasher... me.)
2) There isn’t a washing machine.　(On the weekends, the hours the laundry mat keeps rule my fate/free time.)
3) There isn’t a shower. (There is only a bathtub. )

Because I live in an attic apartment, my walls are the eaves of the roof. Because of this, some of my walls are slanted. The bathroom is the most affected. There literally isn’t enough space for a shower. In the small space under the eaves is my bathtub. You can’t stand up, it is awful.

I have lived with this for over a year and a half now. When I go to my family's house my mother greets me with, "Clean towels are down in the basement and the laundry machine is free‘. She knows I come with my dirty clothes.

I dream of a place with a shower, a dishwasher, and a washing machine.

I do have a Zojirushi hot pot (electric water dispenser) and rice cooker though. They are very useful.

I think American rice cookers aren’t nearly as good as Japanese ones. Last year in this area I found Rojirushi products. They are sold at chain Chinese store that is called Super 88.

マセチゥーセッツのボストンとケンブリッジの近くに一つだけ日本の食品店があった知っていました。

残念ながら看板を下ろしました。お名前は「ことぶきや」を呼びました。五月中賃貸を書き換えませんでした。
後の二十年の間にこの店は日本人が振り掛けを買ったりアメリカ人が日本のお菓子を買ったりした所一つでした。
この辺にホットコーヒーのカンやアイスクリームの餅や単一の味噌汁のパケッや不明な外国の野菜（たとえば　大根）をとても見つけにくいです。
ことぶきやはハーバードスクェルの近くにポータースクェルエクスチェンジと言う所の中にありました。
ポータースクェルエクスチェンジでじゃっかんの日本式の店があります　(六つ料理のレストランや美容院や土産物屋)。
このポータースクェルエクスチェンジは本気大学の構内のビルの一階にあります。
一寸変ですねえ？（ボストンにはたくさん大学があるので大学のビラが何処もです。）

この大学はことぶきやを作ったスペースに本屋を広げました。
ことぶきやの閉店はここいらの日本の繁華街にホールしました。
度々訪ねている人々は引っ繰り返って悲しんでいます。
食品店が去ったから外のレストランが多分煩うと思ういます。
きっと外のレストランは用品と客足が要るから先に困難があります。
ポータースクェルエクスチェンジがないボストンは惨めな理念です。

たまに仕事の友達とこの所に行ってすしを食べて酒を飲みたいです。
私の一番の大好きなレストランはたんぽぽはここにあります。
唯一の揚げ豆腐と野菜と饂飩のボウルを買える所を知っています。
婚約者も大好きです。何時もチキンカツカリーを誂えます。
本気な小さいレストランです。全部二十フィートで二フィートぐらい（七メータで七メータぐらい）だけです。
小さいスペースの中に美味しい食べ物を出せて作って本当に分かりません。
何時も日本語でウェイトレスとシェフと喋ったいですけどこの時に口から悪い日本語がせきお切りました。
一遍シェフがウェトレスに言ったのは分かったと思いました。「茄子がありますん。]を聞きました。喜ばしいでした。：）
大抵分からなかったでも皆の日本語を聞いたのはまだ楽しかったです。

これは地元の現在の文化です。
ボストンの南に育ちました。
あそこに日本料理のレストランのウェトレスはたぶん中国人です。
でもボストンの近くに多分皆が日本人です。ボストンの近くにも時々入る時に「いらっしゃいませ」と言います。でも大部分のアメリカ人はこの言葉遣いを全然知っていません。

「とかい」と言うの日本式のギフトショップもあります。
この店から家族にクリスマスのプレゼントを上げたいです。
ハハは楽焼が好きです。兄の二人娘は可愛いものが好きです。父と二人姉と妹と兄は何でも好きです。
事実上ここから皆さんのプレゼントが得たたくさん色々物を買いました。

ボストンは凄い日本の店を亡くした初回がありません。
少し年前にボストンの一つだけ日本の本屋を店じまいしました。
「さすが」と言うでした。ここで私のごみたろの絵本を買いました。

In the Boston/Cambridge area there was only one Japanese grocery store that I knew about. Unfortunately, they closed their doors.
They were called Kotobukiya. In May, they didn’t renew their lease.
For the last 20 years, this store has been the only place that a Japanese person could buy furikake and an American could get Japanese candy. In this area hot coffee in a can, ice cream mochi, single serve miso soup packets and obscure foreign vegetables (ei. daikon radish) are extremely hard to find. Kotobukiya was close to Harvard Square, in a what is known as the Porter Square Exchange. At the Porter Square Exchange there are some Japanese style shops (six Japanese restaurants, a Japanese hair salon, and a Japanese gift shop.) The Porter Square exchange is actually inside one of the Lesley college campus buildings. This is kinda of strange, yes? （Boston is full of colleges, so college buildings are everywhere.) The school wants to expand their bookstore into the space that Kotobukiya was taking up. Kotobukiya’s closing has created a hole in the Japanese business district around here. Everyone who used to frequent this store is really upset and heart broken. I think the other restaurants might suffer from the grocery store being gone. But if the other restaurants relied on the grocery store for supplies and customers surely hardship is ahead. A Boston without a Porter Square Exchange is a unwelcome idea.

I go out to eat here with my co workers once and a while for sushi and sake. My favorite restaurant, Tanpopo is here. This is the only place where I can get a bowl of tasty udon with fried tofu and vegetables that I know of. My fiance also really like this place. He always orders their chicken cutlet curry. Tampopo is a really small restaurant. The entire restaurant takes up about 20 x 20 feet (7 x7 meters about). I don’t know how such tasty food gets made and served in such a small space. I always want to talk to the waitress and the chef in Japanese, but when I try only bad Japanese explodes from my mouth. Once I think I understood something that the chef told our waitress. I heard, ’Nasu ga arimasen.’ I was pretty excited. ：）Even though most of the time I don’t understand, it is fun to listen to everyone’s Japanese.

Here is a bit of culture from around here. I grew up south of Boston.
At a Japanese restaurant around there a waitress will probably be Chinese. But in Boston, most of the staff at a Japanese restaurant will be Japanese. Around Boston some places even say ‘Irasshaimase’ when you enter. But the majority of Americans don’t understand what that phrase means.

Also there is a Japanese style gift shop called ‘Tokai.’ I like to buy Christmas present for my family at this store. My mother likes raku pottery. My brother’s daughters like anything cute. My dad, my brother and my sisters like everything. Well, actually since I get everyone’s presents here, I have bought lots of things from this store.

This isn’t the first time Boston has lost an awesome Japanese store.
A couple of years ago, Boston lost its only Japanese book store.
It was called 'Sasuga Books'. I got all my Gomi Taro children’s books there.

通うの思考


大抵電車で行くいてので沢山通う話と思うを持っています。

通勤者は電車中に時間を塞いでいます。
人々が色々ことをします。（たとえば本を読んで人やラップトップで映画を見て人や大事な大きい財界のテストを勉強して人や寝て人が見えます。）

概して何時も私が勉強しています。
暫くの後で皆の顔を知ってはじめます。
一つ弁護士の秘書が電車に毎日ニットしています。
一度一緒に会話を持っていた一寸感銘でした。
これは多分電車の中に一番好きな会話です。
今多分彼女はあんまり優しくない人と言います。
附けたイメージはこの面白く感銘な会話です。
生憎オリジナルの会話は英語で言いました。
(日本語でいればこれはもう格好いいでしたねえ。）

電車に幾人かが何時もしゃべりたいです。
私は人としゃべりたいでも時々とても面どくさいできました。
しかし失礼しなかったです。
何時も私と一緒に通勤者がしゃべりたいです。
私は日本語の教科書を読めればだけ忙しくない容姿があると思ういます。
通勤者は何時も中国語を勉強すると思います。
どうやら外国語ごを勉強するので皆さんが長たらしい旅行の伝記を私に言いたいです。

でも大丈夫です。
勉強するは詰まらないだからなんらの休みがあり難いものです。
通例なコミューターは仕事のせびろとカラーシャツを着ます。
でも私の会社はドレスコードがジャないからジーンスとフードのスウェットシャツを着ます。
でも時々通勤者が電車に運動靴を着て仕事のくつが鞄に運びます。
汚いくつと黒く高いせびろを着て人を見ては面白かったです。

私たちが電車を下りる時に黒い海の中に感じています。
短い人から、圧倒すぎります。
冬時にもうクレージーでした。
皆さんが大きい上着を着たから下りた時にはジャイアントの海に入ります。

此の頃、DSの「正しい漢字かきとりくん」と言うビデオゲームを遊んでいます。ゆっくり震度します。
クリスマスから遊んでいます。
最後がもう見えません。
ゲームを遊べるのは手に辞書が要ります。
子供のゲームだって沢山知っていない言葉を作ります。

Thoughts on Commuting

Because I generally take the train, I find that I have lots of thoughts and stories about commuting.

Commuters fill up their time on the trains.
People do various things while commuting. （For example One can see commuters reading books, watching movies on their laptops, studying for big financial tests and sleeping.）
Generally I try to always study.
After awhile, you start to know everyone’s face.
One lawyer’s secretary knits on the train everyday.
I had a conversation with her once; it was really short.
This is probably my favorite train conversation.
I should probably mention that this lady isn’t very friendly.
The attached drawing is about this terse and interesting conversation .
Unfortunaterly, the original conversation was in English.
(If it been Japanese, that would have been more awesome, right?)

Some people on the trains really like to chat.
I like to talk, but sometimes this can be annoying.
It's that you don’t want to be rude.
People on the trains always want to chat with me.
I guess I must not look busy if I’m only reading my Japanese textbooks.
Commuters always think I’m studying Chinese.
It seems that because I’m studying a foreign language everyone wants to tell me their long-winded stories about their travels.
But, it’s okay.
Studying can be boring and any kind of break can be a welcome thing.

Usually commuters wear suits and collared shirts for work.
But because my office doesn’t have a dress code, I usually wear jeans a sweatshirt.
Sometimes, commuters wear their sneakers on the trains, and carry their fancy shoes in their bags.
It's kinda interesting to see dirty sneakers worn with a fancy black business suit.

When we all get off the trains, it feels like I’m in a sea of black suits.
Being so short, it is overwhelming.
The winters are even more crazy.
Because everyone is in their big winter jackets, after I get off the train I enter a sea of giants.

Lately, I’ve been playing "Perfect Kanji Kakitori Kun" for the DS.
I’ve been progressing very slowly in it.
I’ve been playing it since Christmas.
The end is still not in sight.

To be able to play my game I need to have my dictionary in hand.
Even though it is for kids, it uses lots of words I don’t know.

ある時、本から日本語の洒落を一語一語覚えました。
ムーレイ　ジャイルズの‘13 Secrets for Speaking Fluent Japanese’の本に見つけました。
その時に沖縄から女の子と住んでいました。
ルームメートの名前は千春です。
洒落を言って見ました。
これは洒落です。
「木は木でも成ると困る木は何？」
千春さんは分かりませんでした。ただ私に見やっていました。
私は、「病き’です！　はい？　分かりますか？　‘き‘です！」と言いました。
まだ私に見やっていました。
たぶん失語しまった。
私は馬鹿な人を感じました。
それからこの洒落を言うを日本の母話者に言って見ませんでした。

Once I memorized a Japanese joke by rote out of a book.
I found this joke in Giles Murray’s book “13 Secrets for Speaking Fluent Japanese.”
I was living with a girl from Okinawa at the time.
Her name was Chiharu.
So I tried to tell her the joke
Here is the joke.
”ki wa ki demo naru to komaru ki wa nani?”
（This translates to something like : Tree is a tree but what kind of tree is it bad to become?)
Chiharu didn’t get it. She just looked at me.
I exclaimed, ”byoiki… get it… ki?”
She continued to just stare at me.
My pronunciation was probably really bad.
I felt like an idiot.
I haven’t tried to tell this joke to a native since that time.

女の同僚は描くがもう欲いです。
今週の月曜日、　色絵を私に貰いました。
会社の彼女はこの色絵を描きました。
これは老婦と猫のアクリルペインティングです。
週末の時に描きました。「この絵を描いた楽しかったです」と言いました。
ドレスの模様がとても好きです。
眼鏡の金色のペイントも好きです。
美しいですねえ。
同僚は才女な絵描きですねえ。

彼女はこの色絵が“An old hag and a cute cat’と言いました。
日本語で 'おばんとかわいい猫”が意味だと思っています。

今仕事の机に見せ付けています。（つける写真を見て下さい。）

もう会社の彼女のアットを見ればブログに見て下さい。

There is a girl at work who wants to paint more.
On Monday of this week, I got a painting.
This girl at work painted it for me.
This is a painting of an old lady with a cat.
She painted it over the weekend, and she said it was fun to paint.
I love the pattern on her dress.
I like the gold paint on the glasses too.
Isn’t it beautiful?
My coworker is really talented, right?

She titled this painting 'An old hag and a cute cat'. I think that would probably translate to 'おばんとかわいい猫” in Japanese.

昨日仕事中会社の窓外に宙に浮く羽が見えました。
道に車が枕を叩き込むと思いました。
枕じゃありませんでした。
「ｏｈ　ｍｙ　ｇｏｄ！」と大きい声で言いました。
一つメタルだけ窓の岩棚の上にこれは稚い鷹でした。
鳩を食べている鷹が見せました。
この鳩は多分駐車場に住んでいました。
会社の皆が窓へ早く走りました。
会社の人は見守って写真を撮りました。
新しいプロジェクトが始めたから私もカメラが持っています。
これから私も写真を撮りました。
五分後で皆が机を帰った写真がfacebookに容れました。
見たことはクレージーでした。市に働きっていますよ。
（私もベジタリアンです。。。。じゃ魚を食べられるヴェジタリアンです。）
会社の人は「これRed Tailed Hawk だ」と言いました。

Yesterday, while at work I saw some feathers fly by my window.
I thought that maybe someone ran over a pillow on the road below.
There was no pillow.
Oh my god’ I screamed.
Only a meter away from me, on the ledge of my window, was a really young hawk. I saw the hawk eating a pigeon.
This pigeon probably lived in our parking garage.
The entire office ran over quickly.
Everyone watched and took pictures.
Because of this new project I’m working on, I just happened to have my camera with me. Because of this, I could also take pictures.
Five minutes later, everyone returned to their desks and put the pictures up on Facebook.
It was crazy to see this. I work in the city!!
（Also I’m a vegetarian!… well pseudo-vegetarian. I eat fish. )

One of my co workers said it was Red Tailed hawk.

水曜日 / 八日・七月・二千九年


六月前に私の婚約者のお祖母さんは足が壊れました。　

お医者さんがメタルのピンを大腿骨にいれたでもあんまり歩けなかったから一人で住んでいません。これからお祖母さんが養護ホームに移りました。 お祖母さんは八十四年です。葡萄牙人です。ポルトガル語と英語を話すことが出来ます。とても悲しくなりました。お祖母さんは元気な人だって一人で住んでいれば歩けていります。 事故の前にお祖母さんは'ベキ'の名前の猫と住んでいました。

今私のアパートに婚約者と私が新しい猫を買っています。

‘べき‘は変な猫の名前です。アメリカに大抵’ベき’はレベッカ’の女の名前のニックネームです。 ‘ベキ‘を言って友達が持っているから’ベキ’を言った猫が一寸変です。 俗称の猫の名前は‘Fluffy’や‘Mittens’や‘Princess’ や‘Tiger’や‘Socks’や‘Patches’です。

何時も若いt時に“Tuna Breath”を名付ける猫を持つと思いました。
Tuna Breathは日本語で多分“ツナの口臭“が意味と思います。

ベキは並の名前です。日本語で 多分‘山田太郎‘一寸同じだと思います。

（アメリカに‘ジョンスミス’と日本に'山田太郎’が同じです。俗称の日本の女の名前を知っていたを言った。例えば恵子が知っています。
でも私のラックで日本に‘恵子’も俗称の猫の名前です。）.

新しい猫は面白い動物です。優しい四年長い毛のミ毛です。
若い時に車で当たったから三つだけ歩ける足と二つインチのしっぽがあります。

婚約者のお母さんは動物（大半猫や犬）の シェルターでボランティアしたからベキを見つけました。

今お祖母さんがベキをとてもなつかしんでいます。

(沢山言葉をただ辞書に見つめました。これは大変です。正しい作るが欲しいです。）

Six months ago, my fiance’s grandmother broke her leg.
Even though the doctor put a pin in her femur, she lost her mobility and can't live alone anymore. Because of this his grandmother had to move into a nursing home. She is 84 and is Portuguese. She speaks Portuguese and English. This is all really sad. The grandmother is mentally well, but to live alone you really need to be able to walk. Before this accident, his grandmother lived with a cat named Becky.

Now me and my fiance have a new cat.

Becky isn’t a common name for a cat. In America, 'Becky' is a nickname for the female name 'Rebecca'. Because I have friends named Becky, it is a little bit weird to have a cat called Becky. Normal cat names are ‘Fluffy’, 'Mittens', 'Princess', 'Tiger', 'Socks', 'Patches' and so forth.

Growing up, I always thought I would get and name a cat, ‘Tuna Breath’. ‘Tuna Breath’ means something like ‘ツナの口臭’ in Japanese, I think.

Becky is pretty regular/common name. It is probably like naming a cat ‘Yamada Tarou’ in Japanese.(Actually the American English equivalent to 'Tarou Yamada' is probably 'John Smith.' I want to say a common Japanese girls name I know. Keiko' for example is a common name. But, with my luck, 'Keiko' will be a common cat name too.)

Our new cat is a pretty interesting animal. She is a friendly four year old, long hair, tortoiseshell. Because she was hit by a car when she was young, she only has three good working leg, and a two inch nub of her tail.

My fiance’s mom volunteered at than animal shelter and she found Becky there.

My fiance's grandmother really misses her cat.

(I just looked up a lot of words. This is dangerous. I hope the usage is okay.)
