The Greatest Earthquake Ever.

The earthquake in Japan on 11th March had a magnitude of 9.0, which is the greatest one ever.
(At first, the magnitude was said to be 8.8 or 8.9, but it turned out to be 9.0, which is the largest one that Japan have ever had.)

Fortunately, all of my family members were home (can I say "at home" here?) then, and were all right.
My place, Yokohama, is not so near the earthquake center, but I felt as if I had been on a ship in heavy seas... It was really scary!!

We're still having some aftershoks and worried about the lifelines, particularly lack of electricity.

Thanks a million for the prayers and supports from all over the world!! We really appreciate them!

  • The earthquake in Japan on 11th March had a magnitude of 9.0, which is the greatest one ever.
  • The earthquake in Japan on the 11th of March (or, "March 11th") had a magnitude of 8.9, which is the greatest one ever. (You might want to say "which is the biggest earthquake to ever hit Japan." There have been bigger earthquakes recorded in other countries, so saying it this way avoids confusion.)

  • Fortunately, all of my family members were home (can I say "at home" here?) then, and were all right.

Sorry. According to the current reports, it was 9.0. Please disregard my correction of "8.9".

Thank you! I added an explanation about the magnitude. :)

  • Thanks a million you so much for the prayers and supports from all over the world!! ※ "thanks a million" is a very colloquial phrase that seems out of place here.

It seems that this was probably the fourth largest earthquake, at least in the last 100 years, since it became possible to measure them accurately.

The fact that 2 of the 4 largest have occurred in the last 10 years makes me wonder - What is happening to our planet? :-(

Thanks for the corrections and information!
I didn't know that there are 3 more earthquakes larger than this one.

Some experts says the one in NZ has something to do with this one.

Not all sources agree, but I think these were bigger:

22 May 1960
Chile
9.5 magnitude

27 March 1964
Alaska, USA
9.2 magnitude

26 December 2004
Sumatra, Indonesia
9.1 magnitude

The earthquake near Sendai was about 9.0.

In terms if deaths, the worst earthquakes all seem to have been in China, some with over half a million dead. Recently, Indonesia(2004) and Haiti(2010) both had over 200,000 deaths.

Still, it doesn't really matter. It is not a game and there is no "winner". They are all equally terrible in their own way.

I can't imagine how frightening it must be to experience something like this - Although I am 31 years old, I have never felt an earthquake, even a small one.

Thanks for the information.
Although the aftershocks are getting fewer and smaller, we're still worried about the radiation from the nuclear plants and the lack of electricity. x(

The main thing is that you're fine! Many people have said they felt sea sick due the amount of movement! I can't begin to imagine how scary that must have been! Hopefully things will be able to return to normal as soon as possible! Take care!
