Can three-dollar beef-on-rice bowls catch the hearts of single men making a lunch box by themselves?
In Japan, people keep a tight hold on their purse stings due to the prolonged economic stagnation. According to the news, many businessmen/women bring a lunch box with them to their offices in order to save money. Even single businessmen living on their own make a lunch box by themselves every morning and bring it with them. Since the number of these single men has recently increased, the new phrase 弁当男子 (弁当 means lunch boxes and 男子 means men) has appeared to describe them.
Under this circumstance, restaurants whose sales depend on businessmen during the lunch break suffer from their poor performance. They are also forced to be engaged in a price-cut war. Especially, a price battle between three popular chain restaurants to expand their shares has lately caught public attention. These three are well known as beef-on-rice bowls (specifically, a bowl of rice topped with boiled beef and onions, and 牛丼 in Japanese. Please see the attached picture ) which has been popular among men for many years. Surprisingly, all of these three started selling the normal size of the dish at less than three US dollars ( 250yen to 270yen, 1US dollar = 90 yen) several days ago, although the price is expected to get back to around four dollars in a week when the campaign ends.

hahaha....Your idea is impressive. I didn't think of it. However, as far as I know, some of these men enjoy cooking. According to the news, these young men have less interest in having a girl friend and a physical relationship with women. So, we don't expect them to boost the birth rate. hahaha....

Using 'the deflation spiral' kind of makes it sound like it is an actual term used for the economic recession instead of your specific word choice for the situation
But, like someone said, maybe since these 弁当男 can't afford to go out and eat/drink/socialize like they did before, maybe they can spend more time looking for their soulmate in a 弁当女 and then Japan can have a recovering population boom! :D

In America, almost all the fast food joints now have $1 menus, where each item is only $1. It's really popular, and what ends up happening is that everyone orders 4 or 5 items.
I think it's a common business strategy to offer cheap food to get them in the door, and then make money off of the other things that they will order.

Yes, some of 弁当男子 can't afford to do that. However, it's been said that young Japanese men have less interest in spending money even if they can afford. They prefer to spend time at their houses rather than go out.

In Japan, it's said that some recent statistics show that even if these restaurants etc offer special cheap food, many customers just order the special food, and don't order other things. I think that Japanese people tend to take a severe attitude toward this kind of campaign. Gyu-don/牛丼 is enough to fill the stomachs of Japanese men. If they feel that it's not enough, they usually buy a piece of rice ball /おにぎり etc at convenience stores.
Also, gyu-don/牛丼 isn't categorized as fast food. Here, people are very sensitive to food safety lately. Even restaurants selling food at cheap prices pay attention to ingredients and usually announce where their ingredients were produced. Give this situation, everybody realizes that it's impossible to offer a gyu-don at less than three dollars. So, I have doubt about food safety and wonder if restaurants are going to cut down wages for their employees.
