Introducing yourself

I was re-reading the English version of Death Note and I noticed that when Raito (or Light, w/e you want to call him) met Raye Penbar's Fiancee he introduced himself like this:
"I'm Yagami Raito. Kanji of 夜 (night) 神(God) from 神様 and Raito is written as 月 (Moon). Weird name, eh?" and then the girl did the same thing.

I was just wondering if people really introduce themselves like this sometimes.

yeah its pretty common thing to do as far as I know, at least for Chinese and Japanese people. Since there are so many homophones in those two languages, it is basically required for the other person to know how to write the name.

日本では名前の漢字とその読み方が普通の読み方と違ってもよいので、
一般的にこのような紹介のしかたをします。
きっと中国でも同じだと思いますよ。
