Please tell me if these sentences make sense. I am learning the "－て” verb form.
The question is "きのうしごとのあとでなにをしましたか。"
1. デパートにいって、かいものしました。
I went to the department store, and went shopping.
2. バーにいって、タクシーでうちにかえりました。
I went to the bar, and took a taxi home.

デパートに行って、買い物をしました。
（This is a small thing, but 買い物「を」sounds a little bit more natural.)
バーに行って、タクシーでうちに帰りました。
デパートにいって、かいものをしました。 かいもの は動詞ではなく名詞です。do something somethingをしました（something = 「かいもの」）。
バーにいってから（バーにいったあと）、タクシーでうちにかえりました。

do something ではなく did something でした…。
ところで、"taxi"と "home"の間に"to"は必要ないですか。

'HOME' is used as adverb.
That is why we don't put preposition on.

電話する、相談する、旅行する、食事する and so on.
Japanese language reserchers may sigh over the present use of Japanese, but this is the way we say it. Expressions change slowly but steadily.
デパートにいって、かいもの(を）しました。 I personally think this sentence is also good, without "を”. デパートに行って、買い物しました。 デパートに行って、買い物をしました。

Yes, that English sentence is a direct translation. We would not say " I went to the department store, and did shopping."
A better way to say that sentence would be "I went to the department store and shopped."
But, we would say "I went to the department store, and enjoyed shopping."
