One of my international friends asked us Japanese about that Japan should abolish the death penalty immediately.I really understand how he feels. However in the case of life imprisonment in Japan, people get released depending the situation. If we consider feelings of victim and their family and the consequent unrest caused by this situation, there are many complications. We have to discuss the differences of the life term sentences in foreign countries and in Japan.(like life imprisonment with parole or without parole). In my person opinion, I disagree with death penalty because people are not perfect and therefore they could do horrible things like false accusation.
However in the previous cases, some prisoners were released after 10years or less being senteced to the prison, and they did commit crimes again.
Since those cases, the law has been getting much severerer to decide the releasement.Howeve it still remains about the releasement depending on situation.
That's why I'm scared of this law like life imprisonment with parole.
I'm afraid of that serial killers might be released after a few decades even though it's getting severe than it was in the case of life imprisonment with parole.
I feel like I should take charge of answering about this as a Japanese.
However in this current circumstance like life imprisonment with parole, I cannot say just "Yes, I agree with you on abolishment of death penalty." or "No, I disagree with you." It includes more complicated things than other countries.
After all I cannot say just yes or no with those reasons despite what I should do.
How do you think about death penalty in Japan for you in all nations.

I'm not sure from what you've written whether your friend is asking Japanese people about:
1) Asking Japanese people about whether they should abolish the death penalty
or
2) Saying that they should.
I've assumed 1).

How do you feel about the death penalty in Japan for you from other nations?
In the U.K we don't have the death penalty. It was completely outlawed about 10-20 years ago, but even before then no one had been given the death penalty for about 30 years.
I think a lot of people in the U.K are very proud that we have abolished the death penalty, but there is some divided opinion. Many people get very angry when people commit horrific crimes, and would want to see it used then. But most people even then believe the death penalty would be a mistake. For one thing, as you said, people aren't perfect and false convictions will happen. Also we believe the consequences of using the death penalty will not change things for the better (e.g. like in America, where states with the death penalty have higher rates of violent crimes). Also it is held up as a protected human right (the right to life, under the European Convention of Human Rights), and so it is felt that no one should have the right to sentence another to death.
As to the death penalty in Japan, I was at first disheartened that the death penalty exists there, but I decided to read more about it.
It seems to me that whilst the death penalty exists there, it is used very rarely and depends, as you said, on the situation. This appears to be a very well balanced approach to applying the death penalty, and incorporates many of the good aspects of having it or not. A lot of Japanese judges are also reluctant to give the death penalty even in cases where it is applicable, which suggests that Japan is slowly approaching a time where everyone will refuse to give a death penalty on the basis of moral grounds.
For these reasons, yes, I disagree with having the death penalty in Japan, but Japan's current system is very representative of how its people feel about the death penalty, and that it should be allowed to change slowly as the Japanese people's opinion changes towards it. Only then will the point be reached where Japan can as a whole (if ever) abolish the death penalty.
