The complex about the West

Basically I don't really like Japanese music and television.
Because the inferiority complex towards the West appears strongly in them. (Although I don't know the situation these days, since I quit following the J-POP in style about eight years ago.)

Recently I happened to watch this clip of the song in those days (eight years ago or so?)

The first song represents what I want to say exactly.
Silly English sentences are everywhere in it.
And she doesn't even pronounce them properly.
This fashion and Japanese' bad pronunciation has kept driving me crazy for ages.

So the conditions of Japanese music I can listen to without getting annoyed are:

lyrics doesn't include any silly English sentence.

if it's written in English partly, it must be sung with proper pronunciation.

... and all that.

These clips below are of "Japanese" artists I like.

MONKEY MAJIK × 吉田兄弟 -CHANGE-

LOVE PSYCHEDELICO - Right now

  • The first song represents what I want to say exactly.
  • The first song represents exactly what I want to say exactly. (you are 100% correct and it's fine, but this is the more common way to write it)

  • if it's written in English partly, it must be sung with proper pronunciation.
  • if it's partly written in English partly, it must be sung with proper pronunciation. (same situation here, just a suggestion)

Yeah I think it depends on where you come from.

Because in some cases a different pronunciation can make songs more charming or interesting. It might give them a different flavor than before.

Thanks for your music suggestions!

hmm...I don't really understand the message of those two songs below, but as far as pronunciation and instrumental music goes they seem like good bands. I don't have anything against songs that mix languages like the ones that 宇多田 ヒカル creates, but I think most of the English that's used in Japanese songs sounds out-of-place.

I actually like japanese music more than american music since nowadays the number of good singers and bands are extremely low. all of the bands and singers who are legendary in america are the ones that I like (except Michael  Jackson never liked the style). So I like rock, metal, and pop but lots of japans music sounds pretty good (Jpop is way better than what i hear here in america) and I agree that songs with bad or incorrect english do annoy me (except if the song uses only one or 2 words in english cause im fine with a little bit of that).

So you could say that I prefer japanese music over american music. The english thing is a good point I'd rather listen to songs completely in japanese, but some songs pull off using english very well or use very little of it which i think is okay.

Sorry I can't resist teasing you.

Well, I don't know if it's quite that bad.. Engrish can be pretty cute, but it's true that it stops having a purpose when neither Japanese or English speakers are able to understand it. ^_^;
In songs, the purpose of English is just to be cool I guess. There has always been Finnish songs with English phrases in them, too, though I think it's much more common in Japan.

Just a little weird accent in pronunciation isn't that bad (unless it's totally katakana English). Take Indians, they have very unique accent and it's just fine.
The biggest problem must be the grammar when Japanese use Japanese grammar for English.

But in something like the one I posted the pronunciation and grammar is truly beyond understanding. Sorry for the person who wrote it, but the only good thing about that song is that the English is so much overboard that it becomes just too cute for that very reason ^_^
Hmm. The song makes me laugh when I listen to it with lyrics, though, Does this mean it's actually a good song because it makes me happy? Go figure ^_^

Thank you for the corrections, everyone.

ancientscribble-san, I think you're right. I can stand slight foreign accent, but I can't strong one even non-Japanese' ones.

Shin-san, songs of 宇多田ヒカル are not bad. She speaks English, so it's alright.

Vnots413-san, I know some good Japanese musics actually, but they never sell in Japan for some reason.

simo-san, agh, this song is way awful... I'm sick and tired of the way Japanese people think toward English language.... They sound much better when they only use the language they understand, even if they use loads of Japanese-English words.
