Great Britain = England, Scotland, and Wales
The U.K. = England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
In other words, the U.K. = Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland which is on the smaller island, which has Northern Ireland and Eire (The Republic of Ireland).
Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but (the Republic of) Ireland isn't.
One other anomaly is that at rugby, Northern Ireland (part of the UK) unites with the Republic of Ireland, to play as a sinle team.
Usually it's best not to think about it too much, or worry about it. Even Britons tend to be a bit careless about which word they use to describe the country, but a lot of people are also pedantic about it. But when talking about football or rugby, the nations are fierce rivals.
