Betina : STOP THE SLANG ! a call to spanish native speakers (1)

Spanish can be a very tricky language to learn so much so that I have to apologize to all learners of this language because they can get confuse all the time and here is the reason why: If you are learning this language and are taking lessons in Spain or with a teacher from that country you will hit your head at the wall if later you try to speak Spanish with any latin american speaker. With not intent to offend any one AND I MEAN IT.. no one besides people from spain speak its Spanish. If you are learning in the US and you happend to have a porto rican teacher he or she may teach you some words you wont find anyplace else out of caribean countries.
Any ways the diferences you can find in our language can make a long list as long as the "thirty something" countries where they speak Spanish.
Now.. all what I want to say to Spanish speakers when it comes to correct entries in this site is to be aware of the slang each of us use and do not correct and entry using it or do not forget to correct them whenever you see them in an entry, even if it sounds normal to you. Keep in mind to teach as neutral as you can possible be. If there other options you can offer to the learner you can post it but state clear that is another option that can suit in the context of the sentence so the student will nurture its vocabulary.
I just saw an entry the word ENTRADA meaning as POST OR ENTRY .... please people!! in Spanish we do not have such use of this word. As far as I know we write UNA REDACCION- UN ARTICULO-o UN ENSAYO o UN ESCRITO but not "una entrada" A lot of countries from north and central south america are getting used to mix Spanish and English so much so that they´ve created what it is called SPANGLISH. spanglish is slang. Just because we are very used to slang does not mean it is the best option to teach learner of spanish. I could list many word to give samples but I think you have all got my point :)

Betina : New Job= Less Time! (1)

AAbout 2 weeks ago I started working. I like my job a lot infact I decided to work there, I was lucky I had 2 job offer to choose from. I took the one will take less time of my head and demmand less stress because I want this year to return studing english. Now with a full time job I will have just few hours to read or practice in the week and I am not happy for that.
I can speak and I can read fairly well but I have a lot of grammar mistakes when it comes to writing formal English. I register in the librery so now I can take some grammar books to read and that is how I found out I am VEEEEERRRY far yet to reach the English level that I want. Digging deep into the grammar made me realize that I dont know even spanish grammar hahahaaa.. but I like that now I am learning it too :) it is a complex vocabulary I need to learn in order for me to understand English grammar´s rules.
I learned this language alone and without knowing grammar rules, I hope that all this years of my bad habit of writing wrong will be revert. It will be very difficult to learn and correct all my bad habits but I will do it. I regret very bad I dint learn English to become a teacher.. I could have been a very good teacher because I love this language and I love teaching :)

Betina : A topic to write about. (5)

(I will dedicate this entry for my turkish friend Bazi )
Finding a topic to write about is really hard (and I belive It can scares all of us a lot hahaa..) especially when you know that it is your thesis what you have to write about which is crucial for your career .
This writing is not just like any everyday essay and It should be about something you will feel comfortable writing about and most of all It should be about something that will really keep your curiousity high so you will enjoy doing your research too.
If I would have to do a research and write about it I would chose "the English speaking skill of Turkish in Turkey" and let me tell you why : I was surprised to see most of Turkish people have a very good English grammar´s skills, they can write it very well, even telling jokes in English, but just a few of them know how to speak or understand if an English speaker talk to them which I think it is a pity.
All the Turks I talked to stated the same thing... they did not have chance to learn how to speak. I think if you do some research among students of others careers in your university you will see how true is what I am saying now, I think that leaning how to speak a foreing language does not depend on having or not the chances of speaking to a native speaker,of course it can helps you to learn the uses of that language (which not grammar books can teach you)but it is not an imperative. I think it is the teacher´s responsability to make their studens to practice how to speak so they can finally complete that crucial part in the process of learning a foreing language.
who knows if your research about this topic and its conclution may probably bring a difference in the language´s teaching system that will help somehow other students to learn how to speak English in the years to come!

Betina : A Smart Hobby (3)

(FIRST OF ALL I APOLOGIZE FOR THE LENGTH OF MY ESSAY, I hope it will be corrected. In my defense I have to say it is a short self biography of the reason why I am in this wonderful site))

This year I would like to take and international exam to measure how much English I know. I really don’t know how much I know, I could said 60% of what I learned I did it alone :)
The first time in my life I took English lesson I was 11 years old. That time my mom wanted me to enter a bilingual high school ( I won’t say how many years ago because it is not glamorous after you turned 30 to declare your real age hahaha.. ) English was not a language you could learn in public schools, so she sent me to take private lessons for 3 months hopping I will enter to Lola Mora High S. which was the only public school they gave 2 hours of English lesson a day . That year this bilingual school I am talking about, decided to give all their vacancies with a lottery draw, and my number was not among of the lucky ones so I did not enter!
My mom was sad about me not entering into That school because She could see I liked English since I was very small, She says that as soon as I learned how to write a little, I was obsessed with English so much so that I used to spoil most of my elder’s brother musical English’s record´s because I used to listen to it over and over, stopping the record and then writing down he lyric in a small book I had. For sure I used to write the pronunciation of the songs but that was good enough to developed in me what I could call a "smart hobby” . I always say to anyone who wants to listen to me, that time is very precious and having an entertainment is vital to feel happy and to take some of the stress out of your head, so if you will use your time in a hobby, find something that will teach you a skill, don´t spend hours of your time playing video games, or watching tv, find anything to do that: 1- It will distract yourself, 2- It will make you happy and 3- It will teach you something.
Well, after I finish high school with just basic knowledge of English I started taking lesson in an American´s Language Institute, In 3 years I learn enough to be able to carry one with my hobby by my own, I must admit being an addicted since early age of reading whatever falls into my hands (whether it was in English or Spanish) and using a dictionary did the difference in this process of learning a foreign language. I don’t want any of my readers to think I was a “freak” but I used to like reading medical magazines as well as house hold appliance´s manual, that is how I got familiar with grammar and vocabulary normally you won’t get from regular books. Nowhere days with the uses of this blessed internet learning whatever you would like to learn is very easy and affordable.
7 years ago I find another hobby and learned Portuguese, this language was not so complex for me, probably because it is very similar to Spanish. Being able to speak this 2 languages help me to find good jobs easily and most of all, it gives me the chance to travel to other countries and communicate with not problems.
Since last year I started learning Turkish, For some mysterious reason life put on my way a Turkish man. We fall in love online, We already met 2 times and live together for a couple of months and although We communicate throught English I decided to learn Turkish and I must say now I am hitting my head against stones because this language is “upside down” if I compare it with Spanish or any other language alike, but do not panic.. for me it is fun! If it is in our destiny to be together I will surely need to learn his language so these days learning Turkish is my new hobby too.... another smart one!
