Now, a year later, there is still no "Report Spam" button where it should be - on the CONFIRMATION screen where you decide if you want to accept or deny the request. Apparently there is no anti-spam filter too, which would filter out blatant multiple-copy-without-change spam messages (or at least warn the recipient that a message is an exact copy of recognized spam that hundreds of other users receive). There is apparently no section or subject in the HELP structure that would explain what is considered spam and how to avoid spam-related problems. Please take the issue of lang-8 security and anti-spam protection seriously or else we will all suffer. Thank you.

The irony in the spam message is that the email came from a UK e-mail address, and the senders name is "Nancy"...but the spammer can't speak English well!
This is a sign to watch out for (If you are good with English) when receiving spam, or with any language!
If all signs point to the sender being a native speaker of the language (location, name, surname, etc) but their grammar is incorrect and words are being used wrong, then take caution!

I signed up today and already got a friend request from baby2011 before writing anything. According to the profile page (20 friends without contributing anything), her native language is English and she is also learning English...
The confirmation email for signing up appeared in my folder for posts suspected to be spam. I bet this is because this site sents any friend requests to their users' email accounts. A way to deal with it would be to create a small hurdle before a new user can send a friend request, having made at least one approved correction or something like that.

Just check the access ranking.

I think it could be spam
and in 5 minutes this person had doubled amount of friends.
It is 101% spam! No normal people wants to get your email adress in this way! If you would write your email adress to them, your email adress gets sold and you would recieve many many lots of spam!

Whenever I receive suspicious messages (like the sample message posted above) or friend requests with a similar message, I do the following:
1. Go to My Messages
2. Open the suspected SPAM message
3. Click "Report SPAM"
After I report SPAM, then I view the suspected user's lang-8 page and it always looks suspicious (0 entries)
I have questions:
- IS IT DANGEROUS TO VIEW A SUSPECTED SPAMMER'S LANG-8 PAGE?
- IS THERE A RISK OF INFECTION?
- CAN THEY CAPTURE MY IP ADDRESS?
- CAN THEY CAPTURE MY EMAIL ADDRESS?
To answer your 4 questions, the answer is NO...sorry it's a bit late and you probably know by now....you'll only get an infection, or your details recorded if you click on a link which they give you.

Actually the e-mail in this example is a "romance scam" attempt; it's from a scammer rather than from a spammer.
Spammer alert. Sonia 24 years old female USA English / learning Japanese and Spanish . No entries No corrections 130 friends . Presents her / his private email addtress like so : {sonia_williams at yahoo.com} I have tried to report as spam from the friend's request but it does not work .
