Tokyo Skytree was opened in this week. This tower was build in Tokyo Japan.
Many people also know that Tokyo Tower is in there. But many people don't know that a tower was in there at Taisyo era(1912-1926).
This tower's name is "Ryounkaku(凌雲閣 mean: A tower taller than the clouds)". Many people said it "Asakusa jyuuni-kai(浅草十二階 mean: The twelve-story tower in Asakusa.)".
It was designed by William Kinninmond Burton from Edinburgh Scotland. He demurred at install a elevator in Ryounkaku because this tower was too weak to be install a elevator. But Japanese owner was install it.
In 11:58:44(JST), September 1, 1923, Big earthquake hit Tokyo Japan. The Great Kanto earthquake(関東大震災 Kanto Daishinsai) was happen. Ryounkaku was broke look like tower of babel by this earthquake. If didn't install a elevator, maybe it wasn't broken.

by the way, 台灣總督府(Office of the President of the Republic of China) is look like Ryouunkaku at first sight.
I think that 仁丹 kanban in front of Ryounkaku tower was one of his advertising strategy.

I think so too.
台灣總督府 is used Tatsuno style (辰野式) architecture. Tatsuno style architecture was influenced by Victorian Gothic architecture. And Ryounkaku's designer came from UK too. So, 台灣總督府 resembles Ryounkaku.

are his late design work apparently different to his early style, am I wrong? Why did he make the turn?
In 1932, 仁丹 built a new kanban and a new tower that resembles Ryounkaku. But it were dismantled in 1986.

TATSUNO Kingo designed many buildings. He was good at designing Victorian Gothic architecture buildings that used red blocks and white stones. So, Victorian Gothic architecture buildings that used red blocks and white stones in Meiji~Taisyo era is called Tatsuno style. But he also designed some buildings that isn't used red blocks and white stones.
So, some buildings that was designed by TATSUNO Kingo isn't used Tatsuno style. And, some buildings that wasn't designed by TATSUNO Kingo is used Tatsuno style. (For example, 台灣總督府 isn't designed by TATSUNO Kingo but it's used Tatsuno style.)
I'm not specialist in architecture but I guess that TATSUNO Kingo didn't persist in western or eastern. Perhaps he selected some styles at case by case.
